This was too much for Betti'es police escort who now gave up the struggle and gave a loud guffaw. Bertie looked indignant.

'Lord Lissie to give his samples,' a nurse called, brandishing some cardboard dishes and some syringes. The crowded waiting room became even more interested in Bertie.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Drugs, that's what it is," a man said to his wife. "Always is, with those types." And he gave a derogatory sniff.

Bertie and his escort followed the nurse. Bertie tried to persuade the other policemen that he would be quite alright alone with the nurse, but they ignored him.

'You make sure you stay safe, love,' a man shouted to the nurse. 'There's no knowing what he'll do to you if you're not careful.'

Bertie was requested to roll up his sleeve. Unfortunately, it was too tight so he was requested to remove his jacket and shirt.

Reluctantly, Bertie did so, trying to remember if he was wearing a clean vest. The laundry had turned quite a few pink recently, and he'd been too busy to go shopping for new ones.

He was wearing a clean white vest. He was also showing a few scars. "Is that an old bullet wound?" the nurse asked in a loud voice as she prepared the syringe.

'Probably,' Bertie shrugged, his eyes on the needle. 'They mostly are.'

"You should run faster then, mate," said a voice from the cubicle next door.

Bertie grinned.

'You should always know when his shifts are and leave the back door unlocked,' another voice advised.

It was the turn of his police escort to grin.

"Let's just get this bally show on the road," Bertie retorted.

The nurse sniffed and got on with it. She wasn't fond of dealing with men scarred from bullets and blades who arrived with a police escort. She had to patch them up entirely too often and reserved all her sympathies for their victims whom she also had to patch up. Entirely unaware of the category into which he'd been placed, Bertie smiled at her. 'Can I go after this? I need to get back to my boss. He'll be dancing with impatience.'

"I shouldn't think so," she said, her tone dripping ith disapproval. "Men like you shouldn't be allowed out on the streets."

'Oh, I say,' protested Bertie. 'What sort of a man do you think I am?'

The nurse didn't reply but pressed a dressing over the hole the needle had made in Bertie's arm with rather more force than was strictly necessary.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"For your information," Bertie went on, "I'm a policeman. A man in blue. Well, not blue, precisely, because I 'm one of those plain clothes whatchermacallem."

The nurse decided Bertie was one of those undercover policemen that she read about in the News of the World. It didn't make her warm towards him.

"Are we done Mow?" Bertie asked pointedly, suddenly fed up with the whole thing.

"Not until you've been seen by Doctor," nurse retorted sharply, looking down her nose with complete disapproval.

The bystanders in the adjoining cubicles were listening avidly. This was juicier than anything they ever read in the weekly gossip sheets: a real Lord who'd been in a right punch-up, sported a police escort, needed a drug test, claimed to be a plainsclothes copper, had several bullet scars and also claimed to have been in the RAF! All they needed was his love-life to be broadcast and their night would be complete.

'We should have a revolution like the Frenchies and behead them all,' said a new voice, disproving the adage that everyone loves a lord.

"Here I say," Bertie exclaimed, "That's a bit much." He grabbed his shirt and jacket. "I've got bally work to do," he declared.

'The doctor will be along shortly,' the nurse announced frigidly, ignoring Bertie's statement, and walked out with the samples.

'Who do you fancy in the Six Nations?' one of the police escort asked Bertie. He knew how long 'shortly' was in a hospital.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'
