Angus choked on his beer.

Von Stalhein looked at Bertie very closely. He had noticed Angus’s reaction. But surely this archetypal upper class Englishman could not be in Bigglesworth’s squadron. He could not imagine his wily longtime enemy tolerating such tomfoolery.

Bertie polished his monocle complacently and smiled after returning it to his eye.
Angus took a deep swallow of his beer, to cure the cough his choking had created.
Von Stahlien looked at them both.

"Your Commanding Officer must be very tolerant to allow you to leave camp to drink during the day," he observed."Or perhaps he doesn't know?" He raised a sardonic eyebrow

“Commanding Officer, old bean?” Bertie turned towards Angus. “Not sure we have one of those models any more. What do you say, old top?”

"I say, let's have another beer," Angus replied, not quite sure what Bertie was trying to convey.

"Allow me to buy this round," offered von Stalhein smoothly.

“That’s terribly generous of you, Mr ...” Bertie raised a quizzical eyebrow.

"Van Stanislau. I am half Polish and half Dutch," lied the German without missing a beat.

“Come over to have a crack at Jerry? Jolly good show. The blighters need to be taught a thing or two,” Bertie enthused.
