The skeletal figure stared at the little party in front of him, but his eyes rested longest on Dickpa. Finally, it spoke.

"Is that you, Richard?"

'Good grief,' ejaculated Dickpa. 'Are you still around, Roland? How are you doing?'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

The figure's eyes, sunk into its sockets, started to cry. "I thought I'd never be found," he began in a broken voice.

'But why are you here?' Dickpa asked. 'I thought you were somewhere in Palestine. That's where I last heard of you, anyway.'

"Might I suggest that explanations can wait until Roland has had something to eat, a bath and medical attention?" suggested Biggles, relieved that Roland was a real person and not a 120 yr old ghost.

'But he lives in a coffin in our crypt.' Cleopatra sounded puzzled. 'Why would he want a bath? Won't it wash bits off you, Gruncle Rolly?'

"And what about that lady who was kidnapped?" Cleopatra added, "We've got to get her back."

'A man in a black cloak dragged a blonde girl through here a little while ago, ' Gruncle Rolly nodded. 'He swung open the panel on the big carved tomb which is the entrance to the passage to the Church, so I expect that they'll be back soon as it's blocked by a landslide.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

By this time everyone had gathered in the crypt.

"While we're waiting, why don't you tell us your story, sir?" Biggles suggested, nodding towards Gruncle Rolly.

"Do you have a cigarette?" Gruncle Rolly looked at Biggles hopefully.

Biggles obliged. Gruncle Rolly inhaled appreciatively.

"You have no idea how long I've been dreaming of this. I was imprisoned here by people who seemed to think I held the key to some fantastical future of the Empire."

'Why didn't you ask Cleo and Cat to let you out?' Algy asked.

“Aren’t you a real ghost, then?” Asked Cleo. “ You fooled us Gruncle Rolly. Caratacus and I thought you were our friend.”

Gruncle Rolly looked at the twins. "Can't I be your friend without being a ghost?"

“It’s no fun when all the grown-ups know about it,” muttered Caratacus.

“And what about the kidnaped lady?” SHouted Cleo simultaneously.

Biggles suspected that the twins felt betrayed by the lies Roland had told them and uneasily wondered what they would do. He wasn't inclined to trust the man himself. But Rolly'd have to wait until they'd rescued the vision of blonde loveliness.

Before he could say anything, they heard a sound of voices. They were weird and distorted. A few seconds later though, Biggles had established that they were coming from the passage and realised it was the kidnappers, returning after having their route blocked by a landslide.

Biggles motioned everyone to step back into the shadows as the side of the sepulchre swung open.

'Then we have a deal,' the blonde vision said crisply, stepping out into the crypt.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Biggles shushed everyone, even going as far as clamping his hand over Cleopatra’s mouth, making sure she couldn’t bite him in the process.

But Biggles had not reckoned on Raymond, whose indignation and anger at his niece's duplicity was ready to explode.

It wasn't her teeth that Biggles should have worried about. Cleopatra reached out to a nearby coffin and pushed. It was attached to a hidden pivot and swung upright and opened with a suspicious lack of noise. Caratacus pushed the blonde vision of loveliness hard between the shoulders so she stumbled inside. The coffin rapidly resumed its previous position. Faint screams could be heard from within.

Raymond was delighted.

Biggles wasn’t. Hehad wanted to keep the vision of blonde loveliness under surveillance to find out what she would do next.
