Mr RSG just arrived home from a overnight bike trip and presented me with two Worrals' books that I not only didn't previously own, but that I actually have no recollection of ever having read!!! :o

They are Worrals Goes East (reprinted 1947) and Worrals Carries On (new illustrated edn, 1950).

And as a bonus, he had found a copy of WEJ's Adventure Bound.

He does spoil me  :bounce:

So...when I finally finish editing my Research Ethics Protocols to the satisfaction of the University Committee, I'll have some fresh reading in which to indulge.

Oh, bonzer, as you would say. :yay: Not only am I impressed by his thoughtfulness but he apparently retains the knowledge of which books you haven't got.

I was wondering how you were getting on with your ethics paper. Now I know.

Wow, both excellent reads too! I have very fond memories of Goes East, as it was the 2nd WEJ story I ever read [after Biggles Flies South] & belonged to my mother's collection of 3 only, lol.

I had never read of the Middle East before, & WEJ's imagery & descriptions of the towns, places & people fascinated me as a 10 yr old!

Worrals Goes East is particularly good ............. you'll really enjoy that one.
I love the Worrals books. I would go so far as to say that Worrals Flies Again is probably my favourite Johns book of all.

Have I ever mentioned that I actually have an original page of manuscript of Worrals Goes Afoot - the first 2 pages of Chapter 10.
I got it framed with an autographed photo of Johns and an original dust wrapper and the original pages from the book ........ and yes,
I did have a take a Stanley knife to a lovely first edition copy (sacrilege!)

Looks nice framed up like that, DrB, but taking a stanley knife to a first edition? Could you not get a nice clear photocopy?

Whilst visiting Mr RSG's family in the deep south (aka Melbourne) last week we visited a couple of book shops and I scored...

Worrals_Wastelands.jpeg

Since it's published by Lutterworth Press, I thought it was a genuine 1st until I read Dr Biggles' website. DrB points out that the original 1st had the price shown as 7/6d and the next release was priced at 6/-. Mine has the 6/- price printed on the dust jacket with the bottom RH corner having been cut off. Still, I'm very pleased with the purchase - one I didn't have and haven't read since I was about 12 or 13. Your site is such a valuable resource, DrB - much appreciated.

I'm not sure but I think I have a copy of this from a job lot in an auction buy. I won't know for certain as at the moment most of my books are at my old flat. When they eventually move to my current abode I will see. Mr FB has promised to build me some bookcases.i look forwards to being reaquainted with old friends.

Jolly good stuff! I didn't realise the "price" thing either. Just had to dig out my copy & realized [for the 1st time] that I have the 7/6d price showing on an unclipped jacket. Date shown 1949...I assume your copy also shows "1949?" The things you learn here! ;)

I've got this one - but I'm not sure if it's the exact same edition - I will have to investigate further when I get home. I've always loved that Worrals is wearing trousers and boots!

Yes, it's the 1949 edition, OzB. This forum's a veritable mine of information, isn't it? :D
