'I can't think who else might have,' shrugged Biggles. 'I hope we don't need him to open it.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Maybe we should give it a toast with the Elvish spirit," Algy suggested.

'Why not?' shrugged Biggles. He poured a sip into the smallest schooners. 'Soft landings,' he toasted.

The box suddenly exploded in a shower of the glitter and stars of a fireworks display. Rockets whizzed around the heads of the airmen as they ducked, fire crackers cracked at their feet, Catherine wheels threw out multi-coloured sparks and Romans candles fizzled.

'Ruddy elves,' cursed Biggles, beating out a spark smouldering in his favourite jumper.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Do you think that's it?" Algy asked, approaching the now empty box with caution.

'I hope so,' Biggles, too, approached the box.

Inside there was a note.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

Biggles cautiously picked it up, holding it between his thumb and forefinger.

Golden Elvish characters flowed across the surface of the parchment.

They finally settled down into English Script. "Well, what does it say?"Algy demanded impatiently.

Biggles turned the parchment the right way up. 'Happy Christmas,' he started.

The golden symbols swirled around once more. 'I think there might be more,' Biggles muttered as he waited for the words to settle.

"It's from the man himself," he said, in an incredulous tone. "Santa Claus!" he read, when the letters had finally settled down. "I intercepted Elphino's original farewell gift. I do not think that a troupe of scantily clad chorus girls doing the CanCan around your living room was quite the thing...."

"Speak for yourself" muttered Algy. "It's exactly the thing....why did Santa have to spoil it?"

Biggles gave Algy a withering look and turned back to the parchment and it's golden words.

'But if it was, you can substitute Elphino's gift for mine...'. Biggles continued.

"A bit late, since the fireworks have already gone off," Algy muttered

'Do you want me to swap Santa's offering for Elphino's?' Biggles asked Algy, 'or do you want to stop complaining and hear what he's promising?'

"Oh, go on then," Algy shrugged and took another sip of Elvish spirit. "I say, this is rather good, isn't it? How much have we drunk so far?" He lifted the bottle up to the light and peered at the contents. "Has anyone watered this down? The bottle's still full."

Biggles took the bottle from Algy and replaced it next to the soda siphon. 'You have the memory span of a goldfish.' he told him. 'Now listen to what Santa wrote.'

"Elphino has confessed to me that some of the tricks he played on you were not in the spirit of Christmas," Biggles read. "In particular, jamming the lock on the bathroom door." Biggles grunted when he read this. That had been a particularly trying morning.

'Also that he shouldn't have magically changed the colour of your toothbrushes.' The men groaned. They'd missed that one.

"However, Mrs Claus has assured me that, for the most part, you bore everything with good humour and were very kind to Elphino."

Algy had the grace to look slightly embarrassed at that.

"And Elphino assures me that you have been the best hosts he'd had for many years. He's very keen to come back next year."
