Biggles Air Police group build 2018/19 discussion.

Post by VickersVandal » Tue Nov 06, 2018 9:40 pm

Fellow modelers, I'm fairly sure we had a discussion about this on the old forum but where it is now I don't know.

So who is up for an Air Police (or at least post-WW2) group build running December 2018 to end of February 2019? If there are enough takers (let's say 4 absolute minimum) we'll go with it.

I will probably build a Sunderland (Airfix) or a Short Sealand ( resin - can't recall manufacturer).

The old discussion will still be on the old forum, VV. It can be copied and pasted across. We can't make new posts on the old forum, but it is a perfectly simple task to copy and paste word posts across to the new forum.

Copying photos across is harder. Some people seems able to do it without a problem. Others (like me) have a computer than refuses to recognise photos from the old forum. We reached our limit for attachments, recently, but Soppy has sorted us out so photos can come across again as of today.

Hi, VV, There are no threads relating to 2018/2019 GP Build on the old forum. See attachment.
I am one of the few able to copy photos across with ease and I have started to copy some threads of the Modelling Forum across but it's a bit of along-winded process and probably isn't going to be done (by me, anyway,) very quickly.
If anyone wants to transfer data over they can, otherwise it will be done in dribs and drabs as and when I can. I can't guarantee to keep any photos so I hope everyone will take responsibility for their own if they haven't kept copies.

Thanks Kismet, FB. I couldn't recall where the discussion was but I'm sure we had raised this. No matter - there's a discussion now.

They all look very good VV. I think the Air Police build is an excellent idea. I hope you get enough interest to go ahead. Great to see something new coming on to the new Forum :-)

I'll do my best to be part of this - looks like several possibilities.

I will do my best to participate. However, I have recently had retina surgery on my right eye so will be somewhat hampered in the detail department.

I have a couple or three kits that will work nicely for this build.

Jolly good, chaps. Hopefully 266 will be along and that will be our 4 to make it a goer.

No shortage of subjects to choose from - so many aircraft featured in the postwar books....mainly because Johns write so many of them!

Yes, count me in. I'll have a crack at the mysterious Renkell of CID fame.

Renkell is a great choice!

Well, that makes the 4 we need and as it is the 1st of December today we can kick it off any time from now. I'll ask one of the brass hats to set us up a sub forum.

Now I need to choose. Hmmm.....Sunderland or Sealand?.....

Now I think about it, probably the Sunderland as it doesn't require a lot of sanding of toxic resin and I'll be doing some of the building while away on vacation.

I have long considered the Renkells the most fascinating "paper planes" that WEJ created, but totally beyond my ability to do justice to as a model. So I will stick to the same book - one of my all-time favourites - and go for one of the fake Ethiopian Air Force Tiger Moths instead.

The "Abyssinian Air Force" that WEJ refers to had actually disappeared with the Italian invasion in the 1930s, but following liberation in 1944 a new Ethiopian Air Force was created. Amogst its first aircraft were two Tiger Moths requested in June 1945 but not delivered until November. In all reality CID is set closer to June than November, but this is Bigglesverse where things often happen out of their proper time :-) As Wilks says Ethiopian Tiger Moths had visited, that will be good enough for me.

These first Ethiopian DH82As are discussed at https://www.facebook.com/UFEAFA/posts/e ... 858804926/. I attach a small image from that site here:
Facebook.jpg
The photo shows that one of these aircraft was camouflaged and the other probably painted in trainer yellow, to which were later added national markings as well some simple numbering scheme, which the model will reflect if I find evidence before the challenge is over. Mine will also be in plain yellow.

The kit that I already have (minus a couple of seats cannibalized for another model) is the latest German-made Airfix 1:72, miles better than horror we all struggled with in our childhood. It will also use some etched metal fittings purchased on eBay. See image attached:

That kit is superb already but the photoetch will be the icing on the cake. It'll be spectacular once you're done.
Have you built one of the new tigers before? They are a joy to build, as are all the new Airfixes. It just falls together.

On the other end of the Airfix spectrum we have the Sunderland that I just retrieved from the stash. Now that is not a detailed kit....
Still, it will look like a Sunderland when it's done and that's all that matters.

Still pondering what to do here, but might do a Viet Nam Airways Dakota from "Chinese Puzzle". ...or something else. I will chime in again once I figure out what I'm actually doing.

Sorry. I double-checked my notes, and the Air Vietnam craft was a DC-4. Since the kit I have is a DC-3, I'll have to look at other options.

Dakotas pop up here and there. I remember there is a tricycle-undercarriage one I think in Foreign Legionnaire. Now THAT would be a challenge...:-)

A challenge it would indeed be! But I'm limited in my depth perception since eye surgery, so I'm not going to get too far off from "open the box and assemble".

There is a Dakota in "Chinese Puzzle", flown by the American pilot Bollard. However, I also have a Hawker Hunter kit so could do the Indian Air Force Hunter from "Terai".

I also have a 1/700 freighter kit that could serve as the SS Sygnet/Pauline/Corinthia from "Case of the Modern Pirate". I was thinking a ship would be something different to add to the mix. But at 1/700 scale there are many tiny parts, so I might not be able to see what I'm doing!!

I'll decide what I'm up to as the day wears on.

I like the idea of the Indian Air Force Hunter from Terai.

The only reason why I didn't make the Hunter myself was because I couldn't find a kit at a reasonable price. It would be a very interesting aircraft.
