VV's Air Police Sunderland

Post by VickersVandal » Sat Dec 01, 2018 10:31 am

I will be building the Sunderland used in various stories, but I'll be going with the trainer yellow scheme depicted on the cover artwork of Biggles Cuts it Fine:
http://biggles.info/index_files/image053.jpg
http://www.biggles.info/Details/48/
(Thanks, as always, to DrBiggles)

I can't see any evidence that trainer yellow Sunderlands ever existed - postwar they were generally white with upper surfaces in grey or grey/green camo. Nonetheless, this is the Bigglesverse and yellow Sunderlands can exist in Air Police service

I'm using the venerable Airfix kit. Pretty typical of the 1960s era moulds in being short on detail and oversupplied with flash and ejector pin marks. No matter, I'm not going for a masterpiece here. This will do the job.

Image

I think it will be the largest model I have ever built. I don't know that it is going to fit in the display cabinet, so I'm not quite sure what to do there.....

Cross that bridge when I come to it I guess.

Progress shots to follow once I can start. I have some other stuff I am trying to clear out of the way first.

Wishing you well with this, and looking forward to the result.
Is construction of a bigger display case on your " to do" list now? :-)

Thanks, both :-)

My living arrangements don't really allow for a larger display cabinet, unfortunately :(

I have had a pretty hectic time in the last week but I am on break now, so hoping to make a start shortly.

Right, I've been able to make a start. The interior detail for this kit is pretty much nonexistent and I have decided not to rectify that as barely anything will be visible through the canopy or portholes. This should make for a reasonably quick build (he said optimisitically! )

First up was to get all the interior painted in zinc chromate green. It went down very nicely on the grey plastic and I probably won't need a second coat. I also needed to blank off the hole for the dorsal turret as this aircraft won't have one, and fill in the underwing depth charge rack cutouts with some plastic sheet cut to size (white).

I'm looking forward to seeing this one. A bright yellow Sunderland will be quite dashing!

Ditto. If only had a kit for a Short Empire then we could have the whole set from CID!

Well that was silly.....I went and looked at photos of Sunderland cockpits...

Now the modelling OCD kicks in.

I won't scratchbuild more than the centre throttle console! Ok...maybe some decking and bulkheads but THAT'S IT....no really!

Ahem......

(The black part is the floor supplied in the kit, the white parts are scratchbuilt from styrene sheet)

In real life, would they have had bunk beds in those compartments? Two on each side or something ?

I didn't mean for you to add them! I was just wondering if that's what they would've done with the space.

Heh. I know
I'm just way too susceptible to suggestion....

They may have had one or two but I don't imagine the crew would be expected to sleep in the aircraft in the air or on the ground unless it was for short rests in shifts on long flights.

One hopefully helpful photo...I believe the aircraft had six bunks fitted. Good luck with that!

Love the bunks. Perhaps two would be sufficient so half the team could rest while the others flew the plane.

Frecks, if you Google "Sunderland Flying Boat Interior" and then click on "images" you can see a whole bunch of photographs like the one 266 shared.
