Ripping Yarns that were born in the Norfolk Skies

I was googling tonight & found this recent online article [19-1-14] with some great pics. Very interesting & elaborates on WEJ's early flying training on RE8's ["Rumpity's]...seems quite objective & very informative.

The 1st pic is of him in full flying kit standing in front of the propeller of his plane. The 2nd pic in the lounge room I have never seen before! The picture in the background is the one on the front of the dust wrapper to The First Biggles Omnibus, awesome! [I wonder which of his homes this photo was taken in & what era?].

This seems very familiar - have we had some of the text on the forum before from some other site? Good photo though. I don't remember seeing that before.

It is possible, some of the text seems familiar to me too [?By Jove]. The 1st photo is closeup of the one VZ put up in the photo gallery some time ago with the heading "Flying School 1918" I think, but the framed photo of Biggles was impressive. I am guessing the photo of WEJ is from the period when The First Biggles Omnibus was published [1953 or so], as he looks somewhat younger than the usual one you see of him holding the book [?Mystery Island] in front of another bookshelf.

He always seems to like those bowties in many photos.... :D

I hadn't heard the tale of the stow-away fitter before. Classic!

It's in By Jove I'm pretty sure. In fact I think you are right OzB - a huge chunk of that article is lifted straight out of By Jove. And that's why it seems so familiar because I've just reread the book!

I think a lot of it is also in the Mavis Priestley bio OB posted the other day!
The flying school photo is definitely from By Jove, haven't seen the other one before.

Yes, nothing like a bit of blatant plagiarism!

Indeed! Given that the journalist has only recently written the article [19/1/14], maybe he has seen, or owns a copy of By Jove, who knows.

Good article VZ! [seen that photo of WEJ in the forum album I think too] Especially liked the description of Biggles in the article: "very British superhero, a teenage flying ace-cum-charter pilot-cum-aeronautical sleuth-cum-swashbuckling spy whose feats of derring-do spanned war and peace."

I made reference to it in Feb. 2014, I think the author is a 'Trevor Heaton' [article written 19/1/14 it would appear]:

I remember when the article was first published in the newspaper, then it wasn't online.
