“Very well. I believe Thomas here is going to give us his next talk on…” The speaker paused and began to look slightly embarrassed. “That is…well, it’s actually about you, Biggles,” he finished apologetically.

“About me?” Biggles eyebrows shot upwards.

“This should be interesting,” murmured Algy to Bertie, whilst Ginger grinned in undisguised delight.
It's all fun and games until we get to the part about Marie...

[And I've finally managed another short update for this one. My conscience is getting to me and I'm trying to squeeze in fun writing time as a break from RL  This one has a little more in it, I think, so will endeavour to keep rolling out more regular updates...]

Biggles' Reality Check [cont'd]

“Oh, but…” whatever this woman had been going to say was cut short as the military man (as Biggles had begun thinking of him) interrupted, eyeing the four airmen speculatively.

“Biggles has a good point. And think of all the fun and speculation and discussions that we’d miss out on in the future if all those questions and anomalies were resolved. It’d take a lot of the fun out of things!”
“Oh, all right,” agreed the lady with a sigh. “But you have to admit there are just so many things that drive us all crazy trying to figure out! If only wej had been a bit more forthcoming with things like Ginger’s real name and whether Algy’s father’s an earl, or…”

Algy burst out laughing and almost choked on his cup of tea.

“I’m sorry,” he apologized. “But we’re fighting our second world war, not to mention a couple of minor skirmishes we’ve been involved in between them both, and it just seemed so…so…I don’t know, just so ordinary for you to be asking those questions. We don’t even think about them ourselves,” he assured everyone with a smile and a sideways glance at Biggles who nodded firmly in agreement.

‘Please,” he spoke firmly. “Please just continue on with your programme as if we hadn’t interrupted you. I’m sure we’ll enjoy whatever you have to say.”

“I say, old boy, I’ve a question, if you don’t mind?” Bertie looked rather apologetically at his CO, who smiled slightly and nodded permission.

“Well, it’s just that I’m bally curious and all that,” he glanced around and waved over at the posters and book laden tables. “If we’re real in our own world but we’re just fiction here, is ‘our’ history simply fiction here? I mean to say, did you people have world wars and silly political upsets just like we have, or are they all fictitious, too?” Bertie appeared slightly embarrassed in the silence that followed his question. “Well, I mean to say, you people seem to know all about Spitfires, and did one of you refer to this place as an abandoned wartime airfield?” He polished his monocle vigorously and shook his head. “Dash it all, old boy,” looking at Biggles, “there are some anomalies here, don’t you think?”

“You’re right, Bertie,” agreed Biggles thoughtfully. “So not everything is an exact reverse. Some things are fact in both realities.”

“Just not us, apparently,” added Algy with a grin.

“Definitely not you,” agreed the young woman who’d been firmly attached to Algy earlier, nodding emphatically. She sighed dramatically. “You really don’t want to go back to…well, to wherever it is you’ve come from do you? We’d look after you extremely well here.”

As Algy’s grin grew wider, Biggles shook his head, with a sad eye on his 2IC. “No,” he said firmly, “We definitely have to return to our own reality – wherever it is. We can’t leave poor old Angus holding the fort. Not to mention the fact that certain people have some extra duties waiting for them this weekend.” And he cast an amused eye at the youngest member of the group.

Ginger flushed and shrugged. “How was I to know that Tug and Ferocity’d pull a stunt like that right when I was Orderly Officer?” He complained indignantly, while Algy and Bertie’s grins grew wider.

“Oh,” cried another member of the group of strangers, “Do you really tick Ginger off and give him extra duties, just like in the real Air Force?” At the slightly stunned silence that greeted this outburst, the young woman blushed and laughed as she realized what she’d said. “I’m sorry, that sounded quite idiotic. You really are in the real RAF in your world, aren’t you? It’s just so hard to get my head around this.” And she looked around at the other members of her group as if for support. “You all know what I mean – or am I the only one who can’t quite come to grips with this?”

“Don’t worry, old thing,” smiled Bertie charmingly. “I don’t think any of us has bally well come to grips with this, including the old Biggles, here. I know I’m all at sea. Never was any bally good at figuring out the ins and outs of time travel, and yet here we are, if you see what I mean?”

“I think we all see what you mean, Bertie,” agreed Biggles. “The question is, what are we going to do about this?”

Thought i should post an apology here and now to advise that my guilt over not updating my languishing fanfics has had to give way to the demands of RL. For any who may have been following them, I apologise. But when I complete this current academic doctoral unit, I will truly, truly, truly endeavour to indulge in some fun writing and move them all along to completion.

Thank you for he kind words, HC. I am really quite embarrassed about the state of my fics  (both on the forum and on another site  ). RL has hijacked me, and when I do have a spare moment my muse won't co-operate. I do intend continuing with each and every unfinished yarn of mine. The current thesis chapter is due in three weeks then I should have a month's break - so, hopefully, since I'll be back in PNG I shall have some lovely time to write for the sheer fun of it

A/N - Yes, I know, I know - I haven't quite finished The AntiClockwise Props - but it is almost there :D The thing is, when the boys popped in the other night (I was on hospitality, and overnighting pilots come to dinner) and Biggles and the boys all started reminiscing about this strange event again. Algy was quite insistent that I post the following update that they gave me, even if it's not terribly exciting. And who am I to argue with Algy - or Biggles, for that matter? :D

(Especially as the Forum seems to be one of the sites that falls into the category of "sometimes I can access, but most times I can't," and since today appears to be one of those days when I can, I thought I should...)

Biggles' Reality Check (cont'd)

The MC looked at the function’s unexpected ‘live’ guests and smiled.

“Perhaps, if you’d like to sit back and enjoy our programme, we could all have a bit of a brainstorm later and see if there’s any way in which we can help.”

“Of course,” nodded Biggles politely. “I’m sorry. We keep forgetting we’ve gate-crashed your show. Please, ignore us and continue.”

Thomas took his place at the front of his audience and with a rather bemused glance at the four newcomers, began to speak.

“Well, as you know, I’ve been asked to speak on How Biggles has influenced my life,” he paused, glanced Biggles, and cleared his throat before continuing. “I’ve put together a bit of a Power Point presentation to illustrate some of my highlights. Hope I don’t bore you all too much.”

“Not likely,” called out the man who had previously identified himself as a University lecturer. “We’re all waiting with baited breath, Tom, old chap. Fire away.”

“I first discovered Biggles’ books when I was about twelve. I was bored silly one wet weekend in the school hols. Father was home on leave and I’d been pestering him to take me fishing or shooting or something that would get us out of the house and away from my sisters who were driving me crazy.” He flashed an apologetic smile around the female members of the audience. “They’re all younger than me, you see,” he explained. “So Father took me up into the attic where he had a pile of old books stashed away and he shoved Biggles in the Baltic into my hands, sat me down in a dusty old chair and said he didn’t want to see hide nor hair of me till tea time. Well, suffice to say, he had to come fetch me for tea because I was totally engrossed. After that, I read through Dad’s entire Biggles’ collection before it was time to go back to school. He and mother promised to tell my grandparents and various aunts and uncles that all I wanted for my birthday was more Biggles’ books.”

Thomas smiled as several members of his audience murmured appreciatively in recognition of similar events in their own lives.

“Well, I made up my mind pretty quickly that I wanted to join the RAF and fly Spitfires. It took me a couple of years to accept that I probably wouldn’t get to fly a Spitty, but I did apply for Cranwell and was fortunate enough to be accepted. Mother and Father were very supportive considering that Father was a Commander in the Navy at that time and Mother came from a strong Army family tradition.” Thomas had been interspersing his address with relevant photos from his Power Point presentation and Biggles, Algy, Bertie and Ginger had watched in fascination as various RAF related photos had been displayed. The aircraft, in particular, drew appreciative whistles from all four.

“My time in the RAF has given me opportunities that I’m sure I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I survived a tour of duty in Afghanistan, flying Apaches before coming home and transferring to fixed wing – and I’m sure you’ll understand that I can’t actually talk about Afghanistan, but I am allowed to show a couple of photos – my CO vetted them – “ and here Thomas’s presentation moved on to show the reality of military life in there, with a shot of him and his crew in front of an Apache.

Biggles and Algy exchanged startled glances. “I’m not sure I want to know,” murmured Biggles to his 2IC, quickly returning his attention to the speaker.

“Of course, the absolute highlight of my career was being chosen to join the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight two years ago. And I’m looking forward immensely to be part of the Flight as we celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.” Now the display showed the historic Spitfire, Hurricane, Dakota and Lancaster – all of which were the Flight’s pride and joy. He smiled again at the four unexpected guests. “I’ve been flying the Spitfire and I can’t begin to describe the excitement I felt when finally went solo last year. All my childhood dreams and ambitions were finally realised. I had to keep pinching myself to make sure I was awake and this was really real.”

His audience laughed sympathetically – with many sighing in genuine envy.

“I’ve been incredibly privileged to have these experiences, and I honestly believe that had it not been for my introduction to Biggles on that miserable, wet afternoon twenty years ago, I wouldn’t have chosen the RAF as my career path,” he paused and grinned as he indicated an attractive young woman seated to one side of the front row. “And, even more tragically, I probably wouldn’t have met Susan, who’s a Logistics Officer at my base and has finally agreed to marry me.” With that announcement, Thomas acknowledged the applause and cries of “Congratulations! Well done, you two!” and turned to the MC.

“That’s it from me,” he smiled as the MC stood and joined him.

“Does anyone have any questions for Thomas? We all know he’s been an active member of the Forum for the past few years and it’s been a real treat to have both him and Susan here this weekend.”

“I have a question,” Biggles spoke up, glancing around the room.
