Biggles and the Approaching Storm

I love the bit about the feet returning to the floor also!

It’s excellent, Foolscap!

Thank you very much:-)
And...at least they remembered to pack a first aid kit....

6/ In Flight

Hours slip by as miles are covered; houses, fields, then seas below.
One small aircraft trails the other; silver wings in sunrise glow.
Ginger watches clouds surround them, drifting through the morning light;
Thinking back to days long past; to wistful childhood dreams of flight.
Never thought he might regard an airborne trip as dull routine:
And view such panoramic skies as just the normal background scene.
Coal mined depths to current heights; close friends who spanned the void between.
~0~
Train of thought is rudely broken: Bertie, in co-pilot’s seat,
Turns his head, declaring loudly, “Chaps! It must be time to eat!”
Close beside him, Algy mutters, eyes on Biggles’ craft ahead,
“Not that long since scoffing breakfast, not remotely underfed.”
Bertie disregards the comments, with an air of practiced ease:
Catches Ginger’s eye, appealing, “Tea for ONE, and fruitcake, please.”
Ginger grins, and moves, obliging; used to such requests as these.
~0~
Meanwhile, in the leading plane, a very different atmosphere;
Biggles next to Herr Von Zoyton; mutual caution signalled clear.
Each prepared to trust the other, driven by a higher cause
But, continued observation; covert checks on strengths and flaws.
Henry Harcourt studies papers; cabin occupied by two:
Sergeant Smyth completes the party, eager to rejoin this crew.
Seven making up the team: determined that they’ll see things through.
~0~

Very promising, Foolscap. I'm enjoying this.

Thank you so much...taken the boys a while, but they are getting there...I know WEJ was fond of getting all the preparation and backstory in place, but it takes time:-p
Please let me know if dialogue is off, or I am starting to ramble...

7/ Arrival and a surprise for Ginger

Uneventful days of travel, halts for fuel and food and rest.
Lull before the storm expected, calm before the toughest test.
Planes approach a palm fringed airport, distant views are unsurpassed:
Landing on a windswept runway, destination reached at last.
Hangars bleached bone-white by sea spray, buildings scattered to the shore.
Engines stop, and Biggles makes his way towards an office door.
A short and cheerful figure greets him; someone he has met before..
~0~
One advantage gained by Biggles on adventure trips worldwide
Is that odds improve of finding someone who is on his side
In the most unlikely places; lonely airfields, far flung lands.
Those who’d put their lives and fortunes in his safe and steady hands
“Sandy!” comes the joyful cry from Ginger, stunned to find him here.
Memories of pearls and South Sea island friendships still held dear.
Biggles smiles and asks him if he still retains his diving gear..

Lovely! A variation on the "girl in every port" - "a friend at every airfield". :lol:

Yes, I like Biggles knowing a man at every airfield. Some very atmospheric description thanks, Foolscap.

Thank you very much:-)
The cast may yet grow, Frecks:-p
Time for a tiny cliffhanger...

8/ Reconnaissance

Sandy, after introductions, papers checked and drinks served chilled;
Sits in shade with “survey party”: information gaps are filled.
Post is just a temporary favour for his friend in need.
Biggles has his full support; he’s keen to help his plan succeed.
Herr Von Zoyton sips in silence, listens to the whole exchange;
Finds such warm and heartfelt offers of assistance somewhat strange.
Readjusts his own assessment; attitudes can sometimes change.
~0~
Action as the next day’s dawning; both planes leave the golden sand;
Maps and cameras at the ready, searching seas and reefs as planned.
Algy, Smyth and Henry Harcourt watch their trail in brightening skies,
Knowing that so much depends on tracking down this stolen prize.
Hard for those on any mission left to simply sit and wait.
A vital role, but quite frustrating, focussed on their comrades’ fate.
Long hours pass, one plane returns to taxi in;
And one is late...

What could possibly go wrong?

A little bit more...

9/ Missing

Deep in earnest conversation, Biggles and his former foe
Step from cockpit on to airstrip, optimistic mood on show.
Hours spent working close together, analysing sea and shore
Prove that, with enough in common, cool relationships can thaw.
One specific reef formation matches Herr Von Zoyton’s chart;
Biggles shares the details of this promising and hopeful start.
Now he waits for missing friends, as darkness falls;
With heavy heart.

This might not help...

10/ What Happened to Bertie and Ginger

Ginger moves to stretch cramped fingers, hours of setting camera shots;
Hours of scanning blue horizons, zooming in on likely spots.
Reefs can change with wind and weather, sandbanks rise and drown again.
Details from Von Zoyton’s maps are studied carefully, in vain.
No more time for further pictures; course is set for home instead.
Two thuds...the starboard engine stalls, and Ginger’s mouth goes dry with dread.
A frantic hunt as height is lost...
The fervent hope there’s land ahead...

I suppose I shouldn’t leave them for too long like that...

11/ What Happened Next

Any one who safely lands in circumstances such as this
Is skilled beyond the modest claim; “That beach was bally hard to miss!”
A swift adjustment evens keel: a measured pace, a steady drop;
Then wheels gain purchase from firm sand and slow down to a shuddering stop.
Two pilots leave their seats at speed, and view the plane with huge relief;
Though neither likes the prospect of a night upon the open reef;
And neither likes the prospect of the worry caused to friends and chief.
~0~
Ginger checks the engine out, two birds have jammed a vital blade.
The sun goes down and shadows fall as painstaking repairs are made.
The radio stays silent, thanks to Biggles’ orders, stated clear:
Stray signals could alert the foe to what they might be doing here.
The plane is gently swung around to where some clumps of palms conceal
The aircraft from all passing trade, and further searches soon reveal
A huddle of abandoned huts; some shelter for their makeshift meal.
~0~
While tea is brewed, they sit and talk as moonlight hits the sea and spills
Across the wave-lapped shore to catch the tumbling surf which flows and fills
The tracks they made some hours ago, the plane now safe above high tide.
And once they’ve rolled their bedding out they set alarms to coincide
With lowest ebb; then both turn in. Thus ends a quite eventful day.
As dawn mist swirls, both engines roar, and wheels unstick and pilots pray
And wings lift up and soon the tired and thankful pair are on their way.

Thank you all very much:-)
I thought Bertie's flying skills deserved a mention.

12/ Further Discussion

A moment of unguarded joy, at distant aero engine sound,
Transforms to Biggles’ sternest look before the plane is on the ground.
No damage done to friends or craft, a swift debrief of fate and fact:
Infernal luck and skill combined, no other way the pair could act.
A breakfast meeting follows on; developed photographs assessed:
An arc-shaped reef, a palm-edged shore, a cave-scarred ridge, the clues suggest
That this is where their enemies have stashed away their “treasure chest”.
~0~
Von Zoyton stands and leans across to read the maps he first supplied;
A finger traces several spots where craft might rest and men might hide.
Although he has a fair idea of where the stolen goods are stored,
He knows that time is running out before the villains shift the hoard.
Henry passes round the list of missing wares for all to see;
They range from bars of solid gold to works of great antiquity.
Just Biggles and his men between this fortune and catastrophe.
~0~
Bertie, monocle well-polished, umpteenth cup of tea in hand,
Turns to Biggles, “Quite by chance, we found the perfect spot to land.
It might be quite a boon, old lad, to use this handy, hidden space.
To close in on the enemy; a second undercover base.”
Algy wonders how their needs for fuel and transport might be met,
And Ginger chips in, eagerly, “There’s Sandy’s schooner, don’t forget.”
And Biggles listens thoughtfully and lights another cigarette.
~0~
