Love 25. Reminds me of John Masefield, I was a great fan as a child before I discovered Biggles. Is that co-incidence or did you read him too Foolscap?

Thank you all very much, and yes, I did read John Masefield:-)

Another short addition, some longer ones coming up.

27/Fair weather

The crew is up at crack of dawn; the anchor’s weighed and sails are set;
Continued watch revealed no other night time flights, no further threat.
Algy pictures Biggles pacing; anxious, restless, never still;
It sometimes seems that things get moving purely through his strength of will.
Another perfect day for sailing; lines are taut, the wind blows fair;
If they can keep their current pace they could, by eventide, be there.
Every effort’s made by all; they know there’s little time to spare.

Thank you very much, and thank you KK:-)

Just in case you thought I had forgotten about the others...

28/ Bertie gets a shock

Sandy's office at the airfield; peaceful since his friends have gone;
Bertie lounges in his chair: just two legs which it rests upon.
His eyes half-closed; his limbs out-stretched, to all appearances relaxed;
He seems oblivious to care, his form at ease, his brain untaxed.
An instant, and the scene transforms; an urgent message coming through.
He swiftly takes the call in code; alert, his eyes a startling blue;
Then bids his team prepare for flight; they have a vital job to do.
~0~
As Bertie, Smyth and Henry Harcourt reach the mainland, daylight wanes;
They're greeted by an engineer, who leads them to their choice of planes.
Sergeant Smyth inspects the aircraft, every inch, inside and out;
Documents and funds are sorted, all correct; no room for doubt.
They leave the hangar well-secured; their target now, a place to eat.
A pleasant meal, a mellow wine, a gentle walk, a narrow street
Which leads them to the water's edge; the busy docks; a fishing fleet.
~0~
The three companions amble on, with Bertie several steps ahead,
He turns a corner, glances round, then drops his monocle.
Stops dead.
Stunned, he pulls the others back, to shrink against an old stone wall;
He has not really thought about this old adversary at all.
In retrospect, no great surprise, to find him here, involved, and yet...
He risks a further furtive peek. He wasn’t wrong. In silhouette
Against the harbour moon, he sees...Von Stalhein, poised, with cigarette.

Many thanks...well, he had to pop up somewhere along the line...

29 Henry goes alone

Hasty monocle retrieval ...might just give the game away;
Polished briskly by it's owner, actions hiding deep dismay.
A hurried, huddled conversation; out of hearing, out of sight.
Conclusion; foe are on the move...no longer such a peaceful night.
Henry Harcourt volunteers to trail Von Stalhein to his lair;
The others could be recognised regardless of the greatest care:
Old encounters still recalled; the complicated past they share.
~0~
Smyth and Bertie have no better course of action to suggest;
The three confer then Henry bids his friends farewell; begins his quest.
He's far outside his comfort zone, his life of lecture halls and spires;
But, as when wartime changed his tracks, adjusts to what this job requires.
He takes his time and strolls across the stone-paved square towards the quay;
Aware that more suspicion's raised by moving surreptitiously.
He settles on a wooden bench; a tourist gazing out to sea.
~0~
Von Stalhein stubs his cigarette, and swiftly checks the dockside scene;
His watchful instinct's always there, his non-stop wariness, routine.
He walks away from light and noise; to dark and silent winding street,
And Henry trails him cautiously; each footstep hushed; each move discreet.
A dim-lit tavern up ahead; von Stalhein hesitates, looks round.
Henry flattens back against a shadowed door, no breath, no sound.
The tavern's entered; Henry follows on to unfamiliar ground...

Thank you:-)
I like Henry, too

30/ Surveillance

Heat and haze hit Henry as he tentatively ventures in;
The room is packed, the light is gloomy; how on earth should he begin?
A drink. He squeezes past some patrons, makes excuses, finds the bar.
A dubious warm beer in hand, he does not have to look too far;
He spies Von Stalhein sitting down; a second person has appeared.
He cannot catch a word they say, there's too much noise, as Henry feared.
A brief glimpse of Von Stalhein's "friend"; hard-featured, with a trimmed black beard.
~0~
Soaked in sweat, hemmed in by drunkards, straining hard to overhear;
Henry Harcourt's firm conclusion; spying's not a great career.
He suffers for an hour, until Von Stalhein scrapes his chair, and stands;
A final word, the stranger nods, a paper bundle changes hands.
They separate, and Henry weaves his way behind them to the door;
He's never been so glad to leave a crowded public house before.
He smooths his damp and crumpled shirt, continues with his task once more.
~0~
An anxious moment as Von Stalhein glances back suspiciously;
Henry's sure he wasn't seen, but luck can't hold indefinitely.
Decision made, he cuts his losses; wanders past the small hotel
Von Stalhein enters, then moves on to find his friends; a tale to tell.
Relief as he locates the others; brief report, consistent views
That something sinister is brewing, agree that there's no time to lose;
They plan to leave before the day breaks; Biggles needs to hear their news

Meanwhile...

31/ Reunion
The schooner nears the hidden base, before the sea turns silver grey.
They take a dinghy to the shore, the schooner’s anchored in the bay.
Biggles greets them eagerly, impressed that they arrived so fast;
Impatient to proceed as planned, before too many hours have passed.
They speculate about the plane; the reason for nocturnal flight;
He wants to scout the target island, visit it that very night.
Their enemies are getting close; this cannot wait till morning light...

Thank you both very much. As mentioned before, let me know if I am starting to ramble...

32/ Flight at dusk

Algy flies the plane at twilight, eyes on star-pricked skies ahead;
Biggles sits behind with Ginger, time ticks by; few words are said.
So many years they’ve flown together; perils and adventures shared;
Some things can remain unspoken; conversation can be spared.
Two parachutes secured and ready; not long now till baling out.
No guarantee, no risk-free landing, many elements of doubt;
And yet they’ll jump.
It’s what their life's philosophy is all about...

33/ Waiting

Algy heads for home in moonlight, Biggles’ orders well-defined;
Hates this part of any mission; leaving such close friends behind.
Hates to leave the scene so quickly, hopes silk blossoms out below.
Whispered prayers for "no dud landings", a day, at least, until he'll know.
Now he makes a smooth approach to tide-thinned airstrip, deep lagoon.
Bertie, Smyth and Henry Harcourt ought to be arriving soon;
If all is well, they should make landfall some time in the afternoon.
