Biggles and the Approaching Storm

Post by Foolscap » Sat Oct 13, 2018 10:31 am

No idea if this will work...or if this is the right place for it. This includes one or two elements from previous challenges set by Kismet, which I was too slow to complete on time.

1 A Phone Rings

A grey and dismal autumn morning; Special Air Police HQ;
Occupants are bored and restless; yearn for something else to do.
Crime reports and endless filing...banter snapping to and fro;
Ever since their latest mission ended several weeks ago.
Speculation, idle chatter, falling spirits, falling rain;
Two are now engaged in racing droplets down a window pane.
Clock ticks future into past; a slow and empty day, again.
~0~
Discontent is voiced by Bertie, monocle in furrowed brow;
Stifled by the lack of action, “Something needs to happen now!”
Right on cue, a bell rings out; all scramble for the telephone;
Algy answers, turns to Biggles, message meant for him alone.
Urgent call; from Colonel Raymond, half past twelve, no time to waste;
Brief wry smile at Fates thus tempted; cab is called with all due haste.
Prospect of a brighter day is universally embraced.
~0~
The taxi drops him at a modest restaurant some miles away;
A doorman calls him softly over, shows him in without delay.
Ushered to a dim-lit alcove; Biggles peers through semi gloom;
Hard to see in such low lighting, who else occupies the room.
A figure sits in dappled shadow...one he does not recognise,
Until his features catch the lamplight. Biggles stares in stunned surprise.
Past adventures flash before him, scarce can he believe his eyes...
~0~

Stunning Foolscap - so well written, evocative and tantalising. Cannot wait for the next episode. Very well done.

2/ Old Acquaintances

Henry Harcourt smiles in greeting, shakes his old chief by the hand.
One more raw recruit who blossomed under Biggles' sure command.
Time, he hopes, to catch up later, reminiscences must wait;
Colonel Raymond in the background; papers jostle space with plate.
An empty chair and fourth place setting...someone else is clearly due.
Someone who, as Biggles learns, decreed this place as rendezvous,
Someone who is not inclined to step inside police HQ...
~0~
Little time to speculate on who the mystery guest might be.
Crack of light, the door is opened, inch by inch and silently.
A figure in a battered raincoat, collar up and hat pulled low,
Sidles in, alert for danger, shaded eyes flick to and fro.
His hat is raised and once more Biggles stares, his shock is written plain:
Desert winds; hot sun; air combat; sweep away all things mundane.
He never thought his path would cross with this adversary’s again...
~0~
The new arrival nods quite brusquely ; every movement neat, precise.
Memories of past endeavours thwarted by his rival... twice;
Tempered by the codes of conduct both observed; reluctant trust.
Each had helped the other make it through the desert’s blinding dust.
Both respected certain standards, held despite the trials of war.
Neither wished the other ill; opposing hostile sides no more.
But...mused Biggles...what on earth had Herr Von Zoyton come here for?

Thank you for such kind comments :-)
Pleased you like this so far...apologies for vagueness re geographical and aeronautical detail.

3/ Threads Merge

Colonel Raymond takes the floor; his words are spoken soft and clear;
Details of a plot emerge, which could cost Crown and Country dear.
A fortune, lost in wartime conflict, now in dark and vengeful hands.
Consequences dire enough to bring old foe from distant lands.
Chaos planned across the nation: fiends intent on civil war.
Widespread fear, revolt, uprising; funded by this stolen store;
Held by those with one fixed purpose; settling of a bitter score.
~0~
Chance had lured young Henry Harcourt; BA (honours) PhD;
From the dreaming spires of Oxford back to harsh reality.
Research for a recent project took an unexpected turn;
Altered pages from old records rang alarm bells; caused concern;
Sent him on a trail which merged with Herr Von Zoyton’s secret quest
As he sought an old acquaintance, justice, and a treasure chest.
Willing to suspend old quarrels, codes of honour passed the test.
~0~
Herr Von Zoyton takes the tale up; speaks of treachery, deceit;
Men who had dispensed with honour, cheated comrades, scorned defeat.
War, for them, was never ending; no regard for new found peace;
Nations fighting on forever; enmity should never cease.
Risking all, he followed suspects; copied maps and learned their game;
Seeking help, he fled to Oxford, found another sought the same;
Recognised young Henry Harcourt, and his squadron leader’s name...

Thank you all, very much:-)

4/ Plans are Discussed

Dragging close an antique table, clearing it of vintage wine,
Biggles spreads Von Zoyton’s maps out, noting every dot and line.
Unnamed reef; obscure location; marks where goods are stashed away.
A cache with such a lethal role, should be removed without delay.
Lunch is served and barely touched as strategies are long discussed;
Anyone who volunteers to turn this menace into dust
Will risk it all; a test for steady nerves, resolve and total trust...
~o~
No one has to state allegiance; no one has to say a word;
All will act, despite the dangers, minds made up, quite undeterred.
Biggles knows without a doubt exactly what his friends will say;
Nothing in the world will stop them stepping in to save the day.
Meeting over, all depart, with plans to ponder, tales to tell.
Promising to meet up later, Henry Harcourt bids farewell.
Heavy rain, on journey home; the herald of a stormy spell...

Comments truly appreciated...thank you:-)
Getting them moving now...

5/ All is Set in Place

Hat is placed on peg with raincoat; Biggles enters, shuts the door.
Paper planes are swiftly grounded, feet return from desk to floor.
Every eye is fixed upon him; expectation lights each face;
Steely glint in hazel eyes proclaims a new, important case.
Details are revealed succinctly, nothing of importance missed;
Lively group discussion follows, plans refined, some points dismissed.
Vital steps are swiftly sorted; travel route, equipment list.
~0~
Planes designed for distance travel, stocked and checked and fuelled to go.
Paperwork in perfect order, first aid kit installed, just so.
Route mapped out in finest detail, checked precisely, nothing spared.
Cover stories memorised, a survey company declared.
Finally, one crisp, cold morning, all are ready, set to fly.
Thus begins a new adventure; steeped in peril, stakes sky high:
Former foe and wartime comrades setting out to do,
Or die...

Haha! Love this.

And on a more sober note:
Former foe and wartime comrades setting out to do,
Or die...
