"I've sent Ginger and Bertie to check out the betting shops, You and I are taking a little trip to Devon," Biggles said as he took his hat and coat off the stand."To Dartmoor."
Algy had a sudden premonition. "Why do I get the feeling we're not going to pat the ponies?" he asked with a sigh of resignation
Biggles grinned. "You know me too well. You're right, we're not. We're going to the Prison."

"As us, of course," Biggles answered. "Why do you think Ginger isn't with us? Depending on what we find we may need to go in undercover." He looked at Algy, "Unless you want to do it, in which case you'd better stay behind so you won't be associated with me."

Algy hastily denied any desire to become Light fingered Lacey or any other soubriquet that Biggles's sense of humour might bestow upon him, and set off with Biggles to Dartmoor.

Several hours later, a police car hurtled through the main gates of Dartmoor Prison. Screeching to a stop outside the Prison Governor's office, two policemen escorted a dishevelled-looking man into the building. The man looked like a scarecrow, with a scraggy mane of dark hair and a long beard; an eye-patch covered one eye. The notorious criminal, and master-mind of the recent Bank of England robbery had arrived: 'Three-teeth' Riley, otherwise known as ...

He looked surprised to see Biggles.

"'Allo, sir!" he said cheerfully.

Later that day, Algy and Biggles held a conference in a cafe on the way home. The arrival of O'Reilly had proved fortuitous, for he had agreed to do certain things for Biggles which obviated the necessity to put Ginger in under cover. In return he hoped to get a few years lopped off his sentence.

The first thing to do was to visit Reilly's wife and collect certain things that she was safe guarding.

Biggles banged on the door and raised his eyebrows questioningly at the girl who answered, 'Kylie O'Reilly?' he asked.

'No, I'm Miley,' she answered. 'Mum.'

Biggles raised his hat to the rather harassed lady who came to the door. Biggles introduced himself and Algy and explained what they had come for.
"They're in a box in the loft," she told them. She opened a door and yelled " Come here', you."
A surly lad of about twelve appeared. "This is Wiley. He'll get it for you."

Kylie, Wiley, and Miley O'Reilly watched slyly as Biggles opened the box.

"What's this meant to be?" he asked dryly.

(Ok, I'm out of rhymes now, it's someone else's turn.)

The first thing everyone saw was a copy of 'Fletcher's book of Rhyming Slang.'
"Blimey O'Reilly," said Wiley. "Wot have we here? And what is this gear?" he asked, lifting up an object nestling under the book.

'It wouldn't be safe to use after all this time,' Biggles said hastily, putting it in his pocket.

The next item in the box was a revolver. Kylie and Miley gasped. Algy and Biggles could only stare at it.

Wiley laughed at them, and before they could stop him, picked it up, pointed at them and pulled the trigger.

There was a click, and a small flame burned at the end of the barrel.

'Of course Riley has a lighter that's masquerading as a gun,' grumbled Algy.

They went through the other items. A wad of £5 notes had Kylie, Miley and Wiley salivating until Biggles rubbed one with his thumb and the Queen's nose disappeared.

In the middle of the wad, Biggles found the centres of some of the notes had been cut away to create a void, in which a key had been hidden. This was one of the items he was looking for.

The other was another key, a code this time, but he couldn't see where it could be. Unless O'Reilly had hidden it on the box somehow. With seeming disinterest Biggles put all the items back in the box and prepared to depart. "Well, Mrs O'Reilly, Kylie, Wiley, thank you very much. Your husband has been most helpful and I'll see that's not forgotten."
