Biggles picked up the next envelope. It was much thinner than the rest. Out of it he drew a single sheet of paper, covered on both sides with closely written handwriting. Biggles looked at it and handed it over to Gaskin, who read....

"This," said Gaskin, "is a list of safe houses in Europe for the criminal fraternity. You said Ponsonby had flown from Europe when you caught him?"

'We'll watch those after the next big job and see who we find,' Gaskin said with satisfaction. 'But we haven't found what we were looking for.'

Biggles picked up the mousetrap carefully. 'There's only this left. Could he have hidden a clue in this?'

Gaskin looked. "I'll get my lab guys onto it. By the way, a little dicky-bird told me Poodles was seen last night at that seedy club in Soho. The Flying Barman."

'Is that the one which advertised dwarf throwing and was prosecuted under the Trades Description Act?' asked Algy.

"That's the one,"Gaskin remarked. He picked up the passports. "I'll see if I can lift any prints off these. By the way, what exactly did Poodles pinch? And don't give me that guff about a Christmas card list. I wasn't born yesterday."

'Your man put Algy on a spot,' grinned Biggles, 'and that was what floated into the great, empty expanse he claims is his mind.'

"Don't tell me if you can't," grunted Gaskin. "But are you aware he has a brother-in-law in Dartmoor? O'Reilly, I think his name is. Went down a couple of days ago."

Biggles closed his eyes and swore comprehensively.

'It's about time the luck started running my way. Yes, I knew Riley O'Reilly was in Dartmoor. I knew the twister years ago and persuaded him that if he helped we'd look at reducing his sentence. This is his stuff. I didn't know that Poodles Ponsonby was a relative of his.'

"Oh,yes. Poodles' sister is Miley O'Reilly. I don't think she's in on anything, though. They're not exactly rolling in it. Well, it looks like you'll have to put someone else in, doesn't it? I'll help and provide a cover. It'll be young Hebblethwaite, I take it?"

Yes, it will have to be. Algy's been seen and Bertie just wouldn't fit. If he shaves off his moustache he might be less recognisable.'

Ginger was not best pleased. He was okay with going undercover but didn't like the sobriquet Biggles gave him.

"Because," said Biggles with exaggerated patience. "Nobody would take you seriously."

"Who's 'we'?" Ginger asked suspiciously.
