There was a scuffle. A figure broke free and made for the exit. It was Montague. Biggles gave chase.

Algy, Bertie and Ginger kept their automatics trained on the rest of their prisoners. Biggles and Montague ran straight into the guide leading the next tourist group.

The tourists were a group of squaddies, taking a break from sleeping in the sunshine and clubbing. They enthusiastically subdued Montague and Biggles.

'Would you care to offer some more resistance?' one of them asked Biggles, feeling that he'd given in much too easily.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Not particularly," replied Biggles politely. "Would you like to see my ID?"

The squaddie cautiously allowed Biggles to get his ID from his pocket. Biggles was allowed to get up.

"Hey," the squaddie called. "We've stumbled into a Scotland Yard operation."

The Spanish police arrived, with a van to transport all involved to the police station. They didn't bother separating Biggles's gang from Montague's but handcuffed them all indiscriminately together.

Including the holidaying squaddies who were divided between those who thought it was all a huge joke and those who were inclined to be rather indignant. Their tour guide protested volubly.

But his protests didn't extend to insisting that he go with his party to the police station. He drove his bus away in a cloud of dust.

They all made quite an entry into the police station.

It was a very small police station which only had one cell.

At least the police removed their handcuffs before locking the cell door.

There were a lot of recriminations. A cross consul appeared to sort out who was whom and which needed escorting back to Britain. A first class diplomatic row was brewing, he told them, and he'd been hoping to get a few days away for his wedding anniversary.

"Just ring Air Commodore Raymond,"Biggles told him exasperatedly. "He'll vouch for us and we'll vouch for the squaddies. Then we'll take Montague home with us. The rest are non-Brits so you can pass them over to their embassies and you can clear off with a clean conscience."

The relieved consul nodded his head and hurriedly carried out Biggles instructions. He'd already decided he didn't want to become involved in whatever these Scotland Yard types were up to. He rang Raymond and told him the tale then passed the phone to the police chief.

The police chief had a lot to say about London policemen operating on his territory and without his permission, but he was in danger of running late and he had a very important dinner date to keep. He accepted Raymond's assurances at face value and released the airmen and squaddies.

The airmen were driven directly to the airport with security guards to make sure they left. The squaddies were allowed to resume their holiday.

They had not been allowed to bring Montague with them.

This was the most infuriating part of the whole affair for Biggles. He had to be content with the Chief of Police's assurances that Montague would remain behind bars for the time being.

Still, Biggles had the pictures of who Montague had met, and the recordings of what had been said so it was possible Raymond would forgive him.

Not that he had done anything that required forgiveness. It wasn't his fault the Spanish authorities wouldn't allow Montague to leave the country.

But it was his fault that he'd created a scene, alerted Montague to his presence and caused everyone to be arrested.

"Oh, for goodness sake, there you go again," Algy grumbled. "It was a tough call. Chances are you would have lost him had you not gone in then. Which reminds me, von Stahlein managed to avoid being caught up, didn't he? I might have known he'd slope off."

"He did give us a fair warning," Biggles argued.

"And that's another thing," Algy continued his grumbling, "why on earth do you keep defending him? I've never trusted him and I still don't."

Biggles sighed. "You know why. If I've told you once, I've told you a dozen times, but I'm not about to repeat myself. Raymond should be ringing through in a minute and I'll have to go and face the music."

Raymond called Biggles in to his office post haste. The Air Commodore was not happy.
