Algy sighed as he put the cuffs on her. "It sounds as if you're in something pretty deep. We can help, but not if you don't tell us what it is." He turned to Bertie. "Ring Major Charles and tell him that we're bringing her in."

Sophie remained silent during the car ride, silent during her interviews, and silent in her cell. She nodded or shook her head in response to invitations to have a cup of tea or inquiries into whether she wished to use a bathroom, and otherwise maintained a serene, inexpressive face.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

She was a little shaken when Algy and Bertie left after the first interview. But, as per Biggles' instructions, they stayed to watch through the the one way mirror.

"I think old Biggles believes she's innocent," Bertie said to Algy.

Major Charles entered the interview room, put his folder down on the desk and sat down to face Sophie.
He smiled slightly, but didn't say anything and linked his hands on top of the folder.

He just sat there, looking at Sophie. To Algy and Bertie this was merely an interview technique. To Sophie it was nerve-wracking.

"Maybe you're right," Algy said to Bertie broodingly. "Biggles has been sticking with her in a most uncharacteristic fashion. And he did say to stay with her."

'It's four in the morning and she's being interviewed by Intelligence. It might be a bit hard to stay with her now, old boy,' Bertie pointed out.

'I'll keep you company,' Bertie decided. 'I might be of use here. I'll catch forty winks in a chair.

"I rather think I might be of more use," said a well-known voice behind them. They both turned, startled, to see Biggles standing there, his unny half-smile they knew so well on his face.

'Aren't you meant to be in hospital for another few hours?' Algy asked, 'I believe large syringes were to play a role.'

"That's what you were meant to believe," Biggles grinned. "Sorry, chaps, but I had to find a way of getting Sophie safe into custody and make it look real. The Air Commodore thinks that someone in MI5 is behind all this."

'I might decide that strangling you is better than knowing,' Algy said pointedly, once more saddened by Biggles's actions.

He took a deep breath. "Why don't you fill us in?"

Biggles looked at them both. He had protested at length to Raymond over keeping his closest friends and team members in the dark about his current mission. But for once, he had not been allowed to have his own way. He looked directly at Algy.
"Yes, I think it's high time I did just that," he said.

"I did lose my memory," he began, when they had found a quiet corner, "but I regained it within 48 hours." He held up his hand at the protests that poured from his two friends lips. "Hear me out first," he protested, "It was Major Charles' idea that I carry on with the pretence."

Algy thought he would burst, he was so cross and upset. All that worry. All that time trying to help.

Biggles saw this and hastened on with his story. "I didn't want to go through with it and I told both him and Raymond so, but it cut no ice."

"Because there's someone very high upon MI5 who seems to know everything about us before we do ourselves. Remember the last mission where you and Bertie barely got out alive? It is thought the mission was compromised. So we had to make it look like I really lost my memory and the only way that could be one was for you to think I had."

Bertie watched the interplay between his two closest friends. He realised how difficult this must be for both of them. "It's all right, old top," he said quietly. "We both know you well enough to know you wouldn't keep us in the dark if there hadn't been a bally good reason. But where does Sophie fit in to all this?"
