"As a mixer, yes," Algy managed to reply at last. "We had a party."

"What else did he drink?" asked the doctor.

Algy ran through a list of drinks that he knew Biggles had imbibed and then a list of drinks that were available but he couldn't say whether Biggles had drunk or not.

Both doctors stared at Algy, then at one another before both rushing to Biggles' bedside.

"Yes, it must be," one of them said, shining a light into Biggles eyes. "Here, see what you think." And he handed the small torch to his colleague.

'Definitely,' agreed the other doctor. 'I think we'll need some large syringes for this.'

Algy didn't like the gleeful note in his voice.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"That should do it," the other doctor concurred. He turned to Algy. "Don’t worry, now we know what's what, he should be back to normal in no time."

Biggles yawned, muttered 'Stay with Sophie,' and fell asleep. Algy wondered who Biggles was intending to stay with Sophie, himself or Biggles, but found himself ushered out with her before he could inquire.

'Come and pick your friend up in the morning,' the nurse said brightly as she phoned to find a bed for Biggles for the night. 'He'll probably be ready for collection after ten but ring first.'

As they walked out, Bertie walked in, concern written over his face. "How is he?" He asked anxiously.

'I have absolutely no idea," replied Algy helplessly. "But the doctors were very excited about something."

"It would be just like old Biggles to have a jolly old disease named after him," Bertie murmured."What happens now, old chap?"

Algy turned towards Sophie. "We take this young lady in for questioning for starters," he announced firmly.

Sophie became indignant. "What do you mean...in for questioning? Biggles said you were to stay with me."

'What for?' Sophie asked, crossing her arms. 'I've broken no law and I'll sue you for wrongful arrest.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"We're not ordinary policemen, Sophie. We have much wider ranging powers and I'm sure I can hold you under one of our little known, but perfectly legitimate, laws relating to national security," replied Algy, folding his arms and looking at her with cool amusement.

"Is there any way we can talk about this?" Sophie asked, sidling up to Algy with what she hoped was a winning smile on her face.

She knew perfectly well that Algy didn't have a leg to stand on legally and she just needed her witnesses to come a little closer.

Algy did have a leg to stand on. He had been kidnapped and held against his will on her premises with her full knowledge. He told her so.

'Not with my consent, as your colleague knows full well,' Sophie retorted. 'If he'd wanted me arrested, he'd have told you to arrest me. He said 'Stay with Sophie,' not bang her up in Pentonville.'

Algy looked mildly amused. "I don't know if you are aware of this, but I don't need Biggles' consent to do my job. He's hors de combat and as his second-in-command I carry on as I see fit in the absence of any instructions from him. He may have said 'Stay with Sophie, but that doesn't mean I can't arrest you if I deem it necessary."

Sophie was cornered and she knew it. She knew instinctively that neither of these two would fall for any of her charm. She held out her arms, wrists together.
"Cuff me, then," she challenged.

"Are you going to tell me what's been happening?" Algy asked, dangling his handcuffs from one hand.

'No. I'm not going to say a word without my solicitor present,' Sophie replied calmly, 'and I probably won't then, either. Lives depend on me not talking. I'll enter no plea to any charges you bring and take any jail time I'm given for your trumped up charges.'
