"I thought I was to go to a hotel with a WPC," she retorted.

Biggles was called in at this point. Both Algy and Sophie stood to accompany him, glaring politely at each other.

'If you could both wait here,' the nurse told them.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

'I believe you'll find I'm listed as Next of Kin," stated Algy, staring at Sophie.

Sophie, furious, could only sit down again to wait, her only consolation that she wouldn't be alone in the waiting room.

Algy sat and looked speculatively at Sophie.

"So, what's your connection to Biggles?" he asked.

'We have movie nights, as I'm sure you know,' Sophie said demurely, suggesting all sorts of extras with her body language.

"Yes, so he told us," Algy replied, "but how did you meet him?"

'At a party,' Sophie smiled. 'We clicked at once,' she added soulfully to annoy Algy.

The doctor made an appearance through the doors. Algy immediately stood up and went to him.

Sophie put an expression on her face which suggested she was humouring Algy by letting him speak to the doctor first. She was very, very good at knowing how to push Algy's buttons.

Algy drew the doctor away a little so Sophie would not be able to hear. "How is he?" He asked anxiously.

'Physically, he's very well," the doctor assured Algy, 'but mentally he's rather confused. Is there anything you can tell me about how this happened?'

Algy told him of Biggles' accident, his amnesia and his eventual apparently recovered memory and his subsequent actions leading up to that point.

“Aahhh,” said the doctor thoughtfully. “I can’t be certain without proper tests, but it sound so like classic personality malfunction disorder - or PMD.”

The doctor looked slightly embarrassed. "Ahh, well, he - er - said he particularly wanted to see the young lady, Sophie."

Algy took out his police pass and showed it to the doctor. "My friend is a policeman, as am I," he said urgently. "We were on a case involving this young lady when he started to become confused. I must be present when she goes in."

The doctor looked carefully at Algy's ID. He pursed his lips thoughtfully. "All right," he agreed, rather reluctantly Algy thought, "but at the first sign that he is upset, I'm afraid you will have to leave."

"At the first sign he is upset, we will both leave," Algy said firmly. He beckoned to Sophie. "He wants to talk to you. Come on."

Sophie looked annoyingly self-satisfied and she walked past Algy without a second glance. Algy hastily moved to walk beside her as they followed the doctor to Biggles' room.

Biggles was sitting up, but Algy noticed his face was flushed and his eyes unnaturally bright. He grabbed the doctor by the arm. "You do know he's subject to malarial attacks, don't you? And he looks as though he might just be starting on one now."

Unfortunately the doctor had no experience with malaria. He looked alarmed and rushed from the room.

Sophie turned to Algy. "I thought he had a head injury!" She said reproachfully."If this is an attempt to stop me talking to him, let me tell you..." She was interrupted by another doctor coming into the room followed by the first one.

'It's possible,' said the second doctor, 'that what is happening is not due to a head injury and incipient malaria, but to a rare and little known bacterium which used to be found in lemonade. Is there any chance that he has partaken of this beverage in the last forty eight hours?'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Algy couldn't help himself. He started to laugh. Despite his deep concern for Biggles' aberrant behaviour, this question was too funny for words. He stared at the doctors helplessly and struggled against what he recognised as mounting hysteria.
