Quickly followed by "Tannenbaum" to which Elphino started to murmur some alternative words, causing Bertie to splutter.

Elphino grinned, and materialised an entire brass section to play along. The instruments looked strange playing with no human intervention but they orchestrated themselves very well.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Even Mrs Claus seemed to enjoy this and moved in time to the music.

'Two hours for that report,' reminded Mrs Christmas, moving inexorably towards the door. Biggles followed and hastily handed her her hat and helped her into her coat. 'Happy Christmas,' he ventured.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"You'd better get back to your charge," Mrs Claus told him as she clapped her hat onto her head.

Biggles re-entered his bedroom to an ear-splitting cacophony. Elphino had materialised a selection of hooters and streamers.Even Algy had consented to wear a party hat.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Guys ... GUYS !" he called "cut the noise and let Elphino do his report. Maybe we can party afterwards, if there is time"

The music diminished to a quiet background melody and the boys tiptoed out, leaving Elphino and his quill hard at work.

Biggles crept back in again, suddenly remembering he had promised to watch the elf.

Elphino was dictating to his quill in an unknown language quite rapidly. The golden letters scrawled themselves across the air. Biggles was quite interested and thought how convenient it would be to have one of his own for writing reports.

But he didn't say so. He didn't want to disturb Elphino now the little elf appeared to have knuckles down to his task.

At least, Biggles hoped he was writing his report. As he couldn't read Elvish, he was having to take it on trust. For all he knew, Elphino could be playing on Facebook.

But Elphino wasn't. More had passed between himself and Mrs Claus than the airmen had realised. He knew he had to complete a proper report. Mr Claus would need it tonight.

At last Elphino's report was done. His quill disappeared, the words streamed away and 'Cup of coffee?' Elphino asked Biggles hopefully. 'With something in it to warm me up?'

Biggles raised his eyebrows at Elphino. How about hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream?"

'And a chocolate flake?' Elphino asked. 'They are necessary.'

"Obligatory, in fact," Biggles smiled.

Soon, Ginger had made hot chocolates with all the trimmings for everyone. 'What happens now?' Biggles asked. The flat looked very Christmassy and he was worried that it would be left that way.

"You can't not have Christmas decorations at Christmas!" Elphino cried.

"On Twelfth Night, they go," Elphino assured him. "And o mess to clear up either."

The room was quiet as the clock on the mantelpiece ticked its way to midnight. Biggles yawned widely, setting Algy and Ginger off, too.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Biggles could hear faintly jingling bells in the distance, rapidly growing louder and closer.

The fire shifted in the grate. Biggles looked at it guiltily.

The lights flickered and dimmed.
