"That's because they're MY wishes," retorted Biggles.

"So you're not going to give some of your wishes to your friends then," Algy retorted. "Just as long as we know where we stand."

'What would you like to wish for?' Biggles asked. 'It might be something that we all want.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

'No,' said granny genie. 'No one agrees on the global political and sociological structures which would have to exist for world peace to be a possibility. And even now, Biggles is thinking that it would be boring.'

Everyone jumped. They hadn't seen Granny Genie emerge from the lamp.

Granny genie smiled the universal smile of all grannies who have successfully sneaked up on the children, and added a few stipulations.
'You can only wish for something that benefits you or someone close to you. You can't wish for something that affects much or all of mankind. You can't change the laws of physics. You can't turn back time or change something that happened in the past.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Pretty boring, then!!" muttered Ginger who was still annoyed with Biggles for vetoing his suggestion.

"There's some veterans who have fallen on hard times," Algy mused. "Maybe we could wish that a job opportunity comes their way, or.....or....."

"We have unlimited lifetime Sky and Netflix ' Ginger interrupted.

'If we wish ourselves enough money, we can pay for Netflicks and donate to veterans' charities,' Biggles pointed out.

"But how much is enough and won't it look suspicious if a huge amount of money appeared in our accounts overnight? We could be investigated for fraud and money laundering," Algy pointed out.

'I'm sure that the money could arrive via a will or lottery ticket' Biggles said dismissively. 'What else do we want?'

Granny Genie turned to Ginger. "That's a nice wish, young man. Perhaps you might like to share it? It might be granted."

Ginger looked taken aback. He'd only wished for it in his mind.

Ginger thought he'd better be careful about his thoughts while these genies were around. Granny Genie smiled approvingly at him.

Ginger carried on thinking along his original lines. He knew that Algy would like to be freckle free. Would nay of the others like to look different physically? Would Bertie like to look more manly? Would Biggles like to look as if he was capable of wrestling his way out of a wet paper bag?

"What are you thinking of?" Biggles asked suspiciously.

'Nothing,' Ginger said hastily, deciding that Biggles wouldn't suit being big and muscly.

Ginger began wondering if Biggles actually needed anything. He had all that brain power, seemingly inexhaustible stamina, a deceptively mild appearance, was financially secure, owned a flat at a good address, had a job he enjoyed...Ginger’s mind wandered on.

"Can't we use the wishes to help people help themselves?" He asked at last.

'Time's up,' announced Granny genie. She looked approvingly at the men. 'You're nicer people than the ones I usually meet. Have you decided on your wishes or would you like me to decide for you?'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Can we have two minutes to make that decision?" Biggles asked, ever cautious.

'No,' said Granny. 'You've dilly dallied enough.

The four men looked at one another, then three sets of eyes turned to Biggles.

"You make the wishes, please," Biggles decided after a seconds hesitation, "provided someone, or several someones lives will be made the better for the wishes."

Algy, Ginger and Bertie all nodded in agreement. Granny smiled.

"You are men of honour," she said. "I believe you'll be very happy with the results of the wishes I'm going to grant you."
