One of the machines by the side of the bed bleeped.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Doc Lorton looked at it. It bleeped again. He glanced at Bertie.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

There was that indefinable expression on Bertie's face which announced it was Bertie and not Jem.

The nursing staff hustled the men out of the room so they could investigate why the brain dead body on life support was no longer brain dead or needing life support. Johnnie, in particular, was vocal in assuring the boy in the bed that they would come back in the morning as soon as they were allowed.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Once in the corridor, Biggles turned to Bertie. "You all right, old chap?"
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

'Never better, old top,' Bertie assured him, 'but Jem took some shifting. Wasn't wanting to take the plunge at all. Bad case of cold feet.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

'You got Jem to move by convincing him you were going to turn into a gibbering lunatic.' Biggles grinned. 'Not so far off the mark at times. It worked. Well done.'

'What are we going to do with Jem, now?' Biggles asked.

"I suppose we'll have to give him some sort of identity," Johnny mused, "or should we let him make his own up?"

'Are you still willing to let him stay with you for a while?' Biggles asked Johnnie.

"I don't see why not," Johnnie answered. "He's going to need some help, isn't he? "

Biggles nodded. 'I think being in a familiar place whilst he adjusts to modern living will help him.'

"Well , for a start, you can jolly well teach him how to use a razor," Bertie remarked, feeling his roughly shaven chin. "There's a barber over there. I'm off to get sorted. And then I'm going to have a steak. A big one. I think I jolly well deserve it."

Biggles grinned and clapped Bertie on the shoulder. 'You deserve it.'

'You know,' Johnnie said pensively, ' I think I shall quite enjoy having Jem in the house. I'm a bit fed up with my own company. Do you think they'll let him out soon or will he have to detox first?'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"I imagine they'll start him on a detox programme but let him out under your care, when they see he's got a home to go to. He's going to wonder what's happening to his body," Biggles mused, "and will probably wonder whether Bertie's insane family might have been a better bet."

Biggles stayed on for a few days until Jem was released from hospital and had settled into Johnnie's cottage. Bertie, understandably, chose to return to London at the earliest opportunity, not wanting to give Jem the temptation of switching back to his body whilst he suffered the pangs of withdrawal.

Johnnie scrawled an occasional note, after that, to let them know both he and Jem were alive and kicking but nothing major was heard until sometime later when Algy returned from buying toothpowder at the local chemist's with a grin all over his face.

'Look at this,' he invited, dropping a few packages onto the breakfast table.
'Herbal remedies? Biggles queried, picking up the lotions and potions in their old fashioned packaging and turning them over in his hands. 'Not like you to pick quack remedies.'

'Read the address,' Algy invited.

Biggles did so and burst out laughing. 'It seems Johnnie and Jem have started a business.'

'A very successful one according to the chemist,' grinned Algy. 'Apparently, they've spotted a gap in the market and the Olde Apothecary Shoppe brand is selling faster than they can produce the stuff.'

Biggles laughed again. 'So Jem has found a niche in the 21st century after all. Doing exactly what he did in the 16th. It's a funny old world.'

The End
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'
