You tell him chief!
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Jem backed down and shut up. Biggles had suspected for a while that Jem's threats were mainly bluster and this bolstered his theory.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Right, we're almost ready for the off," he declared. "I'll get Algy to follow us and wait in the car." He looked Jem over. "You'll do, but you'd better behave yourself, or else."

The figure in the hospital bed was slight, with hollow cheeks. He was attached to several tubes and leads which Doc Lorton identified and explained to Biggles and Jem.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Jem was very curious. When he had seen this on the magical box they had called television he had thought it some kind of torture, but it had been explained that it was a form of healing. He leaned forward and inspected the man in the bed closely.

'He's on life support,' Doc Lorton said, 'but he isn't badly injured.'

'Is anyone in there?' Biggles asked Jem urgently in an undertone whilst Doc Lorton and Johnnie distracted the hospital staff.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"It is difficult to tell," Jem said after a moment. "There is a barrier, a fog. I must get closer." He pulled his chair right up to the bed and once more stared at the gaunt face.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

'No,' Jem said decisively. 'The body is not breathing because there is no one inside to make it breathe, but there is a fog inside him that I do not have understand.'

"That is because the machine is doing all the work for him," Doc Lorton explained. "He is alive, but there is no one at home. What we now term brain dead."

Jem was uncertain. He thought there was more to the fog.

'Will the body work properly if you are occupying it?' Biggles asked Jem quietly.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"I am certain my brain is much stronger than this man's," Jem replied loftily. "There appears to be not much wrong with the body itself." He looked at Doc Lorton."Explain a little more about the malady of being brain dead " he requested. "Is it a physical manifestation or a spiritual one?"

'Your guess is as good as mine,' shrugged the Doc. 'Physically there is a lack of response to stimuli but no one's proved the existence or otherwise of the soul component.'

Biggles looked at the Doctor over Jem's head. The Doctor shrugged. He really didn't have much else to say.

'The body is young and healthy. You think you will be able to live in it. Get in there, now.' Biggles told Jem.

"I cannot see his eyes," Jem protested. "I know nothing about him. He does not look healthy. He might have consumption."

Doc Lorton asked the nurse if the boy in the bed had been checked for TB. He had, and he was clear.

'Hurry up,' muttered Johnnie. 'I've dithered long enough. I need to identify him as my cousin or deny that I know him.'

Doc Lorton looked at Biggles who nodded. "Just give us another minute, please, Johnnie. Is that a bunch of Chrysthanemums over there? I haven't seen any of those in a long time."

''They're sweet peas,' Johnnie replied, looking strangely at the doctor.

"Not those," Biggles kicked Johnny surreptitiously. "The ones the nurse has just carried into the private ward."

Johnnie turned round to try to catch a glimpse of the nurse and so missed the contortions of Bertie's face as Bertie obeyed his instructions to distract Jem.

Biggles, thinking swiftly, stood up to shield Bertie from any prying eyes. The Doctor watched him carefully. He hoped Bertie would succeed.

By the movements of Bertie's face, he was having a ferocious argument with Jem. Biggles wondered what they were saying to each other.

Biggles, who knew Bertie best, was trying to read the signs. A smile softened his features fleetingly as he imagined Bertie giving the best performance of his life. Probably for his life, he quickly realised. Jem wouldn't take kindly to this.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'
