'Ah, here's the tea,' announced the doctor, standing to meet Biggles as he entered the room. He surreptitiously dropped something into one of the cups, and made sure Jem received it.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"You didn't put much sugar in this," Jem complained, sipping it.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Biggles, who'd seen Doc Lorton add a small pill to Jem's cup, passed the sugar bowl without complaint. He wanted Jem to drink whatever it was.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Jem, ignoring the sugar tongs, grabbed four cubes and put them into his cup. He then took a fifth, and put that in his mouth and crunched on it.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

'You'll rot your teeth,' Biggles said automatically, having said it to Ginger on similar occasions many, many times.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Then I will get the false ones I have seen on what you call the television," Jem said calmly as he drank his tea.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

The pill worked quickly. Scarcely had Jem finished his tea than he looked tired and unfocused. 'What have you done to me?' he cried, springing to his feet and swaying.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Here, sie down," Biggles commanded, and guided Jem to the settee.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Jem 's legs went from under him before he reached the sofa. Biggles caught him and lowered him down.

'Hello, old boy,' Bertie said in satisfaction. 'Your little whatsit has knocked Jem for six. My turn to keep him down.'

"Bertie?" Biggles asked hesitantly. "How are you, old chap?"

'Jolly glad to be in charge,' Bertie said cheerfully. ' Looking forward to getting properly clean and having a tea with the right amount of sugar in.'

"He's got some ideas too I'm not terribly keen on. Bar wenches."And he shuddered.

'How long do you think you can stay in charge?' Biggles asked. 'A few minutes or longer?'

"As long as he's out for the jolly old count, dear boy," Bertie answered. "Doesn't work when he's asleep though, worse luck."

Biggles realised that it would become harder and harder to knock Jem out as he would become suspicious of everything fed to him, so he needed to take advantage of this one period of Bertie being in charge.

'Is Jem listening now?' he asked.

Bertie was sniffing. 'Disgusting,' he announced. 'I'm off for a bath. Can't think until I'm clean.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Nothing would persuade Bertie to do anything until he had a bath and in clean clothes borrowed from the others. Unfortunately,as Bertie's body has been rendered unconscious this meant that Biggles and Doc Lorton had to help him.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Finally Bertie was clean by his standards, glowing red from Biggles's vigorous use of the loofah, and with his hair washed three times by the doctor. They'd refused point blank to shave him more closely than Jem's rough and ready idea of stubble removal and cleaning his teeth had also proved problematic. Bertie declared he felt a thousand times better and was enjoying a cup of tea which wasn't thick with sugar.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Doc Lorton looked at Bertie intently. "Tell me," he began, "can you see and hear everything that Jem sees, as yourself?"
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

'Oh yes, it's only I can't take control usually. I'm aware of everything that goes on and I can have my own little chats with Jem inside, just the two of us.'

'Mostly, I give my opinion on what ought to happen to him,' shrugged Bertie. 'Mostly, he ignores me. Sometimes he has unsavoury questions.'

'I take pleasure in telling him that he can't do things,' Bertie smiled, 'Try to discourage the blighter from staying in my body, what. And I don't want to get arrested because Jem's done something naughty. That would be embarrassing.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'
