Definitive list of censored/changed Biggles books?

Post by Simon Templar » Wed Jan 09, 2019 11:43 am

I was wondering if there's a definitive list out there of all the Biggles books that have been censored/changed by publishers.

I know that the very useful biggles-online website will tell you when you click on an individual book's edition if there are changes, but I was wondering if there is just a simple list of the books, rather than having to click on every title and every edition to find this out.

No, I don't think there is, ST. That could be a project for someone.

It's a heck of a project, especially if you include the magazine stories and serialisations. You'd need access to a lot of different editions, too. Good luck with it, ST. I look forward to reading your research.

Apart from changing the WW1 stories to remove references to drinking and swearing, we have noted on the forum that in Flies North, King's Evidence was changed to Queen's Evidence for a later edition, Flies Again was updated badly (esp. the story of Bob's Box) to try to make it sound like a more modern story by changing the years mentioned, and Black Peril had a whole page or more of dialogue in the magazine serialization that didn't make it into the book - as well as changing Germans to Russians, removing the reference to the Vandal, and having Algy & Ginger refer to Biggles as Captain Bigglesworth.

I recall someone mentioning that there were changes between the magazine stories of Flies Again and the first book edition, too.

My goodness, I hadn't quite realised the extent of the changes! Still, it's a nice longterm project! Thanks guys!

Oh and Condor! How could I have forgotten.

A later edition removes reference to Algy’s fight with a large snake, where he finishes it off by shoving it into a spinning propeller. The whole scene was deleted when a later editor updated the aircraft to a different type.

If you can find a Red Fox paperback, they used the original language.

I found a whole new start to a story in one of the Red Fox first world war stories. Can't remember which book it was in, just my gob-smackedness at coming across it so unexpectedly.
