"Would you mind awfully not talking about me as if I wasn't here," complained Bertie, polishing his eyeglass on the tablecloth in his agitation and nearly pulling it off in the process.

"Bertie's right," said Biggles briskly, hiding his mirth at his friend's increasing agitation.

"Bertie, old chap, where do you want to go dancing with your charming cousins tonight?"

'I don't,' Bertie said indignantly. 'I don't like dancing.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Tough," Adelaberta told him briskly.

"Bertie," said Biggles in his most tolerant voice, "think of it as a challenge. You don't have to like the path you have to follow, you just have to keep your eye on the goal."

"Which is, old top?" Bertie asked, with an edge to his voice and a glint in his eyes.

"To foil the dastardly Dicky and Clara, you ninny," responded Adelberta tartly. "Come on Bertie, see it all as a great bit of fun where we're going to come out trumps. Rather like those stunts we all used to pull together when we'd visit you at Chedcombe and drive your parents crazy. Remember?"

Bertie grinned in remembrance.
"Although I do think you went a bit too far with that old duelling pistol you......ouch!" Roberta glared at her cousin and bent down to rub her leg. "What was that for?"

"All right,' Bertie sighed dramatically. "When you put it like that, I'll join in the bally antics. Be a bit of a rag, what?"

The girls nodded. It would be a very jolly wheeze.

They started to plan. The easiest way to put the word out, Adelaberta maintained, was to tell someone in the strictest confidence that Bertie was ready to settle down and build his nursery.

"So where are we going dancing tonight?" asked Bertie, polishing his monocle and contemplating what he would wear.

The girls conferred. "Darling Millie's cousin's Twenty-fifth birthday bash," Roberta confided."He comes into his inheritpance today so it's bound to be jolly good. It's at the Ritz. Formal," she added, so you'll have to dig out your best bib and tucker."

Biggles muttered something unchartiable under his breath. "Ignore him," Algy grinned at the two cousins, "he always swears his dress shirt is an instrument of torture."

Much to the amusement of the girls, Biggles poked his tongue out at Algy, who grinned back. Bertie’s eyes gleamed. “Come to think of it,” he said thoughtfully, “I don’t remember the last time the old Biggles donned his best bib and tucker for an outing. Should be fun, old boy, with all of us being dolled up to the nines.”

“No photos,”said Biggles warningly.

The foursome drew attention at the party.

'Is that young Lissie boy thinking of settling down at last?' Mrs Fotheringay- Joynes Turner remarked to her friend, Lady 'Chatty' Chatcombe. 'It's about time he did. Send that girl of yours over to join them. She might as well have a go for him '

Lady Chatcombe wasn't the only one to send her daughter over. Before Bertie knew what was happening he was surrounded by a bevy of females all wanting to get to know him better.

Biggles was very pleased with the evident success of their plan and smiled benevolently as Bertie began fielding the bevy of hopeful beauties with charming nonchalance.

Clara had not been invited, but as a society photographer was snapping away, Roberta and Adelaberta were quite pleased with the success of their plan.

Biggles spotted a couple of cronies and tried to sidle away to join them. Roberta was having none of that and made him dance with her.

"Shouldn't you be looking for a husband?" Biggles asked, mainly to wind Roberta up but also to try and get an insight in the Lissie family t psyche.
