However, their remit was simple. They had to make Clara believe that Bertie was on the market for a wife. A pleasant half-hour was spent in coming up with reasons for this.

'No. You can't tell her he can't bend over because of an old war injury and is looking for a wife to cut his toenails,' Biggles bit his cheek to stop laughing.

“Can’t we say there’s a family secret which will only be revealed to him on marriage and will save the estate from ruin?” suggested Aldaberta.

'No. Too enticing a bait. But you can say that Bertie wants to start breeding cattle like his father and wants a rich wife so he can afford to do so.'

“That’s not likely to attract Clara,” Roberta sniffed, “and I don’t like the idea of putting it about that Bertie needs a rich wife, like he’s in debt or something. Think of something else.”

“I’ve already told you,” Aldaberta retorted. “Mystery and money. That and the fact that she might have to work at it to get Bertie interested. Since her ....transformation she thinks she’s the cats whiskers.”

"Her 'transformation'?" asked Algy, intrigued despite himself. "I've ignored her very existence for so long that I confess I forgot she even did exist. What was she like before her current incarnation?" He looked at Bertie sympathetically. "Know your enemy, Bertie. Every bit of information we can gather will help."

"You said yourself she sounded like she was grating rocks, looked like a horse and smelled like one too," Biggles reminded Algy. He turned to the twins. "Obviously, she's invested heavily in her appearance, but why? What triggered the need for the transformation? She didn't need to go through all that just to get Algy. She had that betrothal clause, so there must be something else. Was she lonely or did she have an ulterior motive? What is her exact relationship with Dicky Knee?"

"Well, from what we've been able to find out so far," began Adelberta with a conspiratorial wink at her twin, "it was after she met Dicky at one of his soirees that she began her transformation. She did move in with him at one time, but her mother wasn't very happy about that and rumour has it that daddy threatened all sorts of nasty repercussions to Dicky's physical well-being if Clara didn't return to the family fold. Dicky's not a particularly brave sort of person, you know. So he sent Clara home and daddy was happy again." She turned to her sister. "Is that how you remember it?"

"You should look more closely at Dicky Knee," Roberta added. ""Or, I could." She turned to her twin. "What do you think? Bertie gets close to Clara and I get close to Dicky Knee?"

"That means you'll have all the fun," pouted Adelberta. "What about we both get close to Dicky. People who don't know us really well always muddle us up. We could really have some fun."

So, as Biggles plotted how to get Clara interested in Bertie, Clara wondered how to make Bertie interested in her. Perhaps she should pay attention to his other housemates. Not the ginger one, but the man whose flat it was. He had a silly name. Giggles or Wiggles or Jiggles. No, not Jiggles. She was someone else.,'

She also thought Wiggles might have something to do with children’s entertainment. But it didn’t matter. She’d turn her not i consuderable charms on Algy’s friend. She began planning immediately.

She did her homework thoroughly. It seemed Biggles, as she had discovered his name was, had had a Disappointment in his youth and hadn't looked at another woman since. She closed her eyes and tried to remember what he had been like at Dicky Knee's when he had so rudely arrested her.

Rude, was her overwhelming memory. Not particularly tall, very slight. She thought he ought to be grateful for some attention.

What Clara did not know, and had not discovered, was the existence of a growing Biggles’ fan club run by hopeful female members of Scotland Yard’s finest, the Royal Aero Club and the RAF Association. This was a source of constant amusement to his friends. And had given Biggles many years of practice in the art of courteously dodging potential matrimonial bullets.

But she would discover that the hard way. In the meantime, as she plotted, so did Biggles and Algy, aided by Roberta and Adelaberta and a very reluctant Bertie.

'I think we should just start spreading the word around that you're seriously looking to settle down, Bertie," said Roberta determinedly. "You're looking for the right girl to become Lady Lissie and mistress of Chedcombe and produce a few little Lissies for the future." She smiled wickedly at her cousin.

"Now, now, Bertie," chided Roberta, as Bertie muttered something under his breath. "That's no way to talk to a lady. Nanny would be most upset."

"How could I have possibly forgotten that!!" exclaimed Adelaberta, clapping her hand to her mouth as her eyes danced.

"He does a pretty mean fox trot," agreed Algy, also with dancing eyes.
