"Did you expect anything else, with von Stahlein?" asked the Air Commodore dryily.

'I wonder what they are trying to conceal?' Biggles tapped a pencil against his cheek as he thought. 'And why someone kept sending us cakes?'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"I wonder if von Stahlein is aware that you're running this squadron and it was all an elaborate ruse of some sort," the Air Commodore mused.

'I think von Stalhein would have put emetics in the cream if it was down to him,' Biggles retorted. 'No, I think the cakes were someone else. Someone trying to subtly draw attention to the farm and I've been criminally slow on the uptake.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Just a tick" interposed Bertie "He admitted to us, in the "Red Lion" that they made cakes, when they could get enough sugar" Angus nodded in agreement.

"That could just be a cover up," Biggles frowned. "He might have discovered what someone was doing and trying to allay suspicion. No, there's very definitely something funny going on. "

'Why would von Stalhein ask Mr Hughes how many pilots were here if he already knew?' Raymond asked. 'Bigglesworth reported that your mystery baker was in the habit of making one cake for each pilot.'

'Also, why would von Stalhein bake cheese straws saying 'Help, Godbetts Farm?' Algy interposed.

"Don’t forget, though, the the first cake was addressed to me personally," Algy pointed out. "If von Stahlein had done it or known about it, then he would have known for sure Biggles wouldn't be very far away."

'I think there are several people on the farm,' Biggles interposed. ' Some of them, like our old friend Erich, are definitely opposed to us. Others might be there under duress or as some sort of hostage. That's going to make sorting out Godbett's harder.'

“What do you suggest, Bigglesworth?” The Air Commodore asked irritably. The thought of a spy on the loose was playing havoc with his ulcers.

'I don't know, sir,' Biggles replied, ' I've got a few ideas, but to be quite honest, if the Home Guard and Figgis are prowling around, they would be dreadfully in the way.'

"We could create a diversion," Ginger suggested eagerly. "Draw them away."

Raymond frowned. 'I don't want to know the details, Bigglesworth, but you better let me know what you need.'

"Then if you don't want to hear the finer details," Here, Biggles grinned, "Perhaps you'd like to go to the Mess? Toddy can escort you."

Biggles sent his officers away whilst he planned. An hour later he called them back and outlined what he had decided.

Ginger and Taffy were extremely disappointed that their role in the plan meant they were still confined to base. Ginger actually opened his mouth to say something but a sharp dig in the ribs from Algy's elbow stopped him in time.

Ginger was to supply the diversion. He was to ring the Home Guard and report suspicious goings on in the vicinity of the base to recall the Home Guard from Godbetts farm, which was where Biggles thought they would be. He had to brief several Sergeants on their role in the pretence before calling the Home Guard, to give Biggles time to get into position near Godbetts with his team. He wished he was going to the farm himself. It would be much more exciting.

Biggles had ordered all his officers who were going to the farm to be armed.
"What are you doing, Mr Highes?" He asked Taffy as that young officer was among the crowd outside the armoury.

'I thought we were all to be armed, look you,' Taffy explained disingenuously. 'I'm only following your orders, sir.'

"You'd best go and see the MO about those ears of yours," Biggles told him. "I said 'all those going to the farm' as you very well know."

'Will Ginger take the restrictors off?' Taffy asked hopefully. 'So I can move faster than a running man?'
