"Van Stanislau. I am half Polish and half Dutch," lied the German without missing a beat.

“Come over to have a crack at Jerry? Jolly good show. The blighters need to be taught a thing or two,” Bertie enthused.

"Och, aye, mon," agreed Angus deciding he should help things along. "Bluidy Jerries!"

Bertie, to all intents and purposes, relaxed and off guard, was studying the German as Angus spoke. He saw a slight stiffening of the body. "Sorry, old bean, if it's painful for you talk about 'em," Bertie offered."Shut up, Angus, oldlad, can't you see the poor feller's dyin' to give a wallop to old Adolf. Must be jolly frustrating, what? Unless..." He put his eyeglass to his eye and looked von Stahlein up and down. "Perhaps you can fly? One of those Polish pilot chappies?"

“Your sympathies are not needed,” retorted von Stalhein frostily. “I do not fly. I am in the baking industry.”

Bertie's face lit up. 'What's your speciality?' He enthused.

“AYe, mon,” chimed in Angus with equal enthusiasm. “Do ye make any of those little French patisseries? I wouldna mind a tray full of those pastries we used to get in Paris. Or a macarone.” He smiled reminiscently at von Stalhein.

"Not that ye can get the sugar these days," Angus went on. "Yon Women's Institute get the lot for their bledy jam." He sniffed.

"We specialise more in cakes - when we can get sufficient sugar," von Stalhein nodded towards Angus. "Our European recipes are proving popular here."

"That sounds jolly scrumptious," Bertie nodded at von Stahlein. "Where do you sell them from?"

Von Stalhein eyed Bertie thoughtfully.

"We deliver," he replied smoothly.

The door burst open then and a crowd of young farm workers burst in. Bertie took the opportunity to drain his glass. “Well, must be getting along,” he said, “there’s a war on and all that rot.”

Back at their base, Bertie and Angus confirmed that the tall man with the limp was Erich Von Stalhein and repeated, as near verbatim as they could, their conversation with him.
Biggles listened thoughtfully before dismissing them and turning to Raymond.

'Well, do you want to give us orders, or would you rather we ambled along to the farm without any?'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

The Air Commodore was inclined to hesitate. “We should really call the local police,” he began. “We don’t have jurisdiction on a civilian property.”

Biggles pushed the phone towards him. "Go ahead,' he invited. 'The local plod struggles to get blackout enforced and the Chief Constable spends his time trying to rejoin the boys in blue, despite being past retirement age and missing a leg.'

The Air Commodore bit his lip. “We could get the Home Guard for backup,” he began, but stopped when he saw the look of horror cross Biggles’ face.

'The Home Guard aren't in Active Service units for a reason,' Biggles pointed out tactfully. 'I couldn't square it with my conscience to involve all those unfit boys and elderly men.'

“Nonsense. It’s what they’re there for. Now, if you can get me their Divisional HQ on the phone?”

Biggles reluctantly complied. It was a Wednesday. Would the Division Commander be in? He attended church meetings in his capacity as church warden on the second Tuesday of every month, and oversaw the Boys Brigade on Fridays. Biggles tried to remember if he did anything on a Wednesday.

He wasn’t in. Biggles heaved a sigh of relief until the Air Commodore ordered him to put a call directly through to the CO of the local unit.

The CO of the unit wasn't in. No information could be gained as to his whereabouts. Biggles frowned. He rather thought that they were planning something and he said as much to Raymond. He wondered if it was connected to the visiting Intelligence person who had received such a cold welcome at his base and the Red Lion.

The Air Commodore suddenly stiffened. “Get some men together,” he ordered. “If that fool Figgis goes there, he’ll blow the whole thing. He’s a good intelligence officer.....behind a desk but out of his depth in the field.”

Biggles soon had all his pilots, even Ginger and Taffy, lined up in front of him. Quickly he explained the situation and asked for suggestions.

The Air Commodore, thinking some additional information would help on determining the layout of the farm in question, asked for the photographs to see how they matched up with the map.

Biggles studied each photograph carefully as it was passed to him. 'There're some heavily camouflaged things around this farm,' he remarked. 'Look, this appears to be part of a vegetable garden but as you can see from this shadow, it's not actually at ground level. They've got a lad who really knows what he's up to disguising stuff.'
