"Me, too," Bertie said,"but you notice he didn't offer to pay."

Meanwhile Raymond was interviewing the crew of the Lanc and her fighter escort, on another matter. Whilst doing so, he had an idea.
One of the hurricanes was equipped with camera guns which were reloaded with new film and adjusted to work without firing the guns, it was then dispatched to overfly Godbetts farm on both outward and return flights, looping around before returning a few minutes later. The pilot was given instructions to make a single pass each time as though strafing the buildings.

He soon returned and the film was handed over to the waiting technicians whilst Raymond returned to Biggles' office to await the results.

Meanwhile Bertie and Angus had wandered into the pub, ordered their pints and were engaged in friendly banter with the publican.

"One of yours was in earlier," the publican said as he handed over the pints. "These were bought for him, but I reckon no one will mind if you have them. You're all blooming heros in my book."

"Thanks," said Bertie. "Have one yourself. Nice chappie to buy drinks for our lot. I wouldn't mind thanking him."

"You'll be able to do that right now," The Publican nodded towards the door. "Here he comes now."

Bertie and Angus turned with casual interest to view the tall man who entered the bar. He definitely walked with a slight limp. And he matched the photo Biggles had shown them. This had to be the legendary Erich von Stalhein, Biggles' nemesis and German agent extraordinaire.

Bertie tried to look casual, and allowed his gaze to run right round the pub, before returning to the drink in front of him.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

" understand we have you to thank for this," he said, in his best cut-glass accent, raising his glass. "Much appreciated, old boy."

"My pleasure," responded von Stalhein in his faultless English. "I presume you are both from the base up the road?"

"What's that old top? Is there a base up the road?" Bertie asked innocently.

"Your caution is admirable," von Stahlein told him, "and given the fact that your country is at war, I won't press you, so I will draw my own conclusions."

“Oh, you draw? Are you an artist?” Asked Bertie, polishing his monocle idly and gazing innocently at the German. Although he was becoming used to Bertie, Angus still tried not to choke on his beer.

"I have certain artistic tendencies," the German remarked, eyeing Bertie through his own monocle.

"I'm particularly partial to the method known as Trompe-l'œil" was the reply. "You have perhaps heard of it?"

Bertie surveyed von Stalhein with well-feigned delight.

"Oh, I say! Sizzling Sausages and all that. That's tophole old chap, absolutely tophole. I have a distinct weakness for artistic visionary illusionistic works of art."

Angus choked on his beer.

Von Stalhein looked at Bertie very closely. He had noticed Angus’s reaction. But surely this archetypal upper class Englishman could not be in Bigglesworth’s squadron. He could not imagine his wily longtime enemy tolerating such tomfoolery.

Bertie polished his monocle complacently and smiled after returning it to his eye.
Angus took a deep swallow of his beer, to cure the cough his choking had created.
Von Stahlien looked at them both.

"Your Commanding Officer must be very tolerant to allow you to leave camp to drink during the day," he observed."Or perhaps he doesn't know?" He raised a sardonic eyebrow
