He went through everything he told Biggles and also a couple of things he hadn't. Once or twice the Air Commodore interjected to clarify a point, but otherwise didn't say anything.

“Thank you, Mr Hughes,”Raymond said finally. “Just one more detail and I think we’ll be finished. Can you remember whether the tall man with the limp asked any questions and if so, what they were?”

Taffy thought for a few moments, wrinkling his brow in concentration. “Well, he did ask some quaestions, look you.”

The Air Commodore and Biggles looked at each other. "What did you tell him?" The Air Commodore's voice was sharp.

Taffy looked anxious.

“I know I’d had a fair bit to drink, sir. I may have exaggerated the numbers, look you. I seem to remember tellin him that we had 100fighter pilots here so we’d need lots of cake.” Taffy looked miserably from one to the other.

"Well, I doubt if he'll believe that," Biggles said, a bit worriedly. Loose lips sink ships was a saying the Americans were fond of using and Taffy's lips had appeared to be quite loose. If the Air Commodore chose to make something of it, Biggles doubted if he could save Taffy from any fallout.

The Air Commodore looked at Biggles thoughtfully.

"We've all done worse," he murmured softly. "Taffy didn't mean any harm."
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

It was clear to Taffy from Biggles' expression that his CO didn't share the Air Commodore's leniency and he expected another dressing down later. He fidgeted, his wounded leg giving him some pain.

“Sir, I’m sorry,” Taffy said with genuine remorse. He wanted to be anywhere except in Biggles’ office right then.

"Was there anything else he asked? Anything at all?" The Air Commodore pressed.

Taffy thought for a moment. From the recesses of memories somewhat hazy due to the amount of alcohol his brain was still processing, he dragged up one comment that he now wished was truly a figment of his imagination. He knew it wasn't though.

"Yes, sir. He asked me if I knew the Honourable Algernon Lacey - said he was his cousin."

The Air Commodore and Biggles cast sharp looks at each other. "What did you answer to that?" Biggles got in before the Air Commodore could say a word.

Taffy swallowed. "I honestly don't remember, sir," he replied desperately. "I think that might have been about the time everyone decided they'd come back to base with me."

"I rather think, that if MR Hughes hasn't got any more to say, we can let him go," the Air Commodore suggested."Of course, Mr Hughes, if you remember anything, anything at all, you'll report to your CO immediately."

"And you'll confine yourself to the Mess and your quarters," added Biggles still in that same cold tone.

"Yes, sir," acknowledged Taffy and made himself scarce.

Biggles turned to the Air Commodore. "We need to make sure it's really him," he sighed,"before we take any further action."

The Air Commodore agreed."What do you suggest?"

"He knows us, and Algy and Ginger, on sight. We need to send someone he's never met."

"How about Lissie or Mackail?" Raymond suggested. "Are either of them about?"

Bertie and Angus listened to Biggles’ suspicions about the cake supplies, the farm, and more importantly about the identity of he tall man with a limp who claimed Algy as his cousin.

Bertie polished his monocle and looked off into space for a moment or two.

“DO you want Amgus and myself to go to the pub and check him out, sir?” He asked.

Biggles confirmed this and a short while later, Bertie and Angus found themselves walking along the narrow road that led into Rawlham.

"This is the first time I've ever had orders to go to a pub and have a pint," Angus commented amicably.
