Algy thought Mr Figgis would explode, so red in the face was he.

Bertie and Angus were both impressed. They hadn't seen Biggles explode so spectacularly, yet with such quiet deadliness, before.

Mr Figgis was escorted from the premises, threats of retribution falling from his lips.

Biggles collapsed in his chair. "Get the Air Commodore for me, Algy," he ordered as he lit a cigarette. "I need to speak to him before that man does."

Algy handed the receiver to Biggles after he'd spoken to Raymond for a few minutes. He, Bertie and Angus all listened to Biggles' side of the conversation.

"Yes, sir, he exceeded his remit. He as good as accused me and the squadron of being involved."

Whatever Raymond said next the others would never really know, but Biggles eyebrows rose, his lips thinned and his grip on the receiver tightened.

"Perhaps you would like me to come up immediately, sir," he said tightly.

"You're in charge," he told Algy a moment later. "I'm off to the Air Ministry. See what else you can find out about Godbett's farm but for God's sake, keep Taffy where he is."

"Before you go," said Algy urgently. "Do you think friend Erich might be involved in this? Because if that rattlesnake's behind this we really need to walk carefully. I wouldn't put it past him to have set this whole thing up to land you squarely in the mud!"

"There's probably quite a few tall men who walk with a limp," Biggles stated, "but I might be able to convince Raymond that I should investigate the goings on on the grounds it might be von Stahlein."

At that moment there was a cacophony of noise.
A plane roared low overhead, the squadron office phone rang and the tender drew up outside and the driver indicated his arrival with a brisk triple honk on the horn (because of the plane's noise).

"What the..." Biggles was out of the door in a flash, followed by his flight commanders and Toddy.

He was just in time to see a Lancaster, escorted by two Spitfires and two Hurricanes all make rather startling landings. The Lanky rumbled to a halt just short of the hangar, narrowly avoiding Biggles' own Spitfire that Smyth had only recently finished overhauling.

The pilot of the Lancaster thrust his head out of the window and bellowed for help and a medic. Toddy ran off to arrange this. Biggles realised, with despair, that most of his squadron were still out on the exercise which Taffy's exploits had interrupted his own participation of.

One of Doc Lorton's orderlies drove over - at some speed - in the blood wagon, and swerved around to as near to the fuselage door as he could get, he then climbed inside.

Biggles scrambled aboard to find our what had happened. Holes in the side of the craft where the Navigator had sat told one part of the story. He could also see where other parts of the plane had been damaged. Whether the sortie they were on had been successful or not he couldn't say. He stuck his head out if the door and yelled to Algy.

"Get Bertie and Angus to get the Squadron back," he ordered. "We're washing out for the day."

"And Toddy, ring the Air Commodore and tell him I'm unavoidably delayed." Biggles rapped the second order out and turned his attention to the crew of the stricken bomber, forgetting the four fighters that had escorted it down.

But Ginger was there, talking to the pilots who were now standing outside the main office as the casualty was taken away in the blood wagon and the rest of the Lancaster crew disembarked.

Toddy came running up to Biggles, his face displaying considerable agitation.

"Sorry, sir," he announced, "I'm afraid the Air Commodore is waiting on the phone and wants to talk with you personally."

Biggles cursed but ran to the office. Before the Air Commodore could speak Biggles waded in with what had just happened at his airfield and respectfully asked if the Air Commodore's business could wait.

Biggles groaned, but at least he was spared the trip to London. He went outside again and hoped it wasn't long before his squadron turned up. A few of the Lancaster crew were found to have had injuries they hadn't bothered reporting and the escort planes had been badly shot up too.

Symth and his ack-emmas did a certain amount of shuffling to get the visiting planes under cover, the Lanc proving difficult being much larger than anything else, but hanging some spare netting over the nose and cockpit helped.

By the time Raymond showed up, order had - more or less - been restored. As much as it ever was at 666 Squadron.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

Biggles returned to his office, confident that Algy, Bertie and Angus were overseeing the return of the rest of 666 from their exercise around the local countryside. He thought he'd have time to have a "chat" with Taffy before Raymond arrived and asked Toddy to collect and deliver the wayward squadron member.

Taffy entered Biggles' office, saluted, remained at attention and awaited his doom. At least this time, there was no audience.

Biggles regarded Taffy for a moment before he spoke. When he did, Taffy felt Biggles' tongue was cutting him to flinders.
