Figgis was not used to being put in his place as firmly as Biggles had just done and retreated behind a fit of the sulks. Angus re-entered with Toddy in tow.

Taffy again described the urchin at the fence. Toddy thought for a few seconds. "Sounds like young Ned, the Stationmaster's youngest," he said.

"Can you describe any of the others who joined you on your way to the Red Lion? Toddy might recognise them as well." continued Biggles, who wasn't precisely clear in his own mind where he was going with all this but was determined not to give Figgis a chance to intervene and create an unnecessary disaster.

Taffy did is best, but as he hadn't been paying any particular attention to the boys he was unable to provide more the n the sketchiest details. Toddy was able to identify only two more boys.

Toddy then added thoughtfully "I have an idea that group of young rascals will be known to the schoolmaster, shall I give him a call ?"

Biggles nodded. "Yes, we need to knock this on the head."

Whilst Toddy rang the schoolmaster, Biggles contemplated Taffy who was becoming increasingly uncomfortable under his CO's gaze. Biggles really wanted the chance to give his wayward pilot a good dressing down, but he wanted to do it in private. If they didn't need his input into sorting out the Red Lion conspiracy, he'd have banished him to his quarters until he could deal with him. He sighed inwardly and cast a critical glare at the oblivious Figgis.

"Alright, Mr Hughes" Biggles brought Taffy's attention back to the point "Describe how you happened to get into the bar at the Red Lion. and who was there"

"I just walked in, sir. The boys only came as far as the door with me. I'm not sure of the names of everyone - apart from the publican, Old Charlie Lightale, of course." Taffy frowned as he concentrated.

"The guy from the Home Guard might know, though," he volunteered a few seconds later.

"Do you mean that bank manager who struts around the village ordering everyone about?" Biggles did not have a very high opinion of the officer in charge of the local Home Guard, having crossed swords with him on more than one occasion.

"No, this one was an older chappie,on a bicycle. I couldn't see a rank on his arm."

"And this Home Guard chappie on a bicycle came into the Red Lion with you?" Biggles' patience was beginning to be very stretched.

"You've been to the Red Lion often enough before. Why did you need someone to escort you this time?" asked Biggles.

"I didn't," Taffy explained, while Mr Figgis looked very interested in his answer.."The boys just took me, look you. They seemed to think I couldn't manage on my own, on account of my chair."

Deciding he needed to move the interrogation past the helpful children and the bicycling Home Guard and into the Red Lion itself, Biggles ignored the reference to Taffy's chair. He knew Ginger's intentions had been well-meaning, but he sincerely wished his young protege had not utilised his engineering skills in this particular manner. That was a conversation he would have with Ginger later.

"Let's move on to when you went into the Red Lion. Who were the men you were drinking with?"

Taffy gave this some thought. ."I recognized Bob, he's the builder, look you," he finally managed, "and Farmer Giles, but the others..." he frowned. He was having difficulty remembering, but didn't want to have to confess that most of the faces were only a blur through an alcoholic haze.

"Were any of them strangers, men you hadn't seen before?" asked Biggles helpfully, beating the increasingly restless Figgis to the punch.

"Two," Taffy finally said. "They weren't from around here. I think someone mentioned they were from Godbett's farm, way over the hill."

At this piece of information, Figgis's eyes gleamed and he leant forward. This time he beat Biggles to the punch.

“One was reasonably tall. I think he might have had a bit of a limp now I come to think of it,” said Taffy thoughtfully.

Biggles and Algy stiffened. Thankfully Mr Figgis didn't notice.

"Any other features you may have remembered?" Biggles managed to get out.

"About him, sir?" Taffy screwed up his face thoughtfully. "He spoke very correctly - public school, look you. I didn't hear anyone calling those two by their names."
