Ginger had been expecting the summons. Although he hadn't done anything wrong he surreptitiously crossed his fingers.

"Mr Hughes tells me you knew he was going to go to the Red Lion, even though he would be disobeying a direct order. Is that correct?"

Ginger swallowed and stared at the wall above Biggles' shoulder. He could tell his commanding officer was not a happy man. "Yes, sir," he said simply.

Ginger bristled and constrained his temper with an effort.

"I told him he was … making a poor choice," he said slowly. "I tried to dissuade him."
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

"If you tried to dissuade him, you didn't do a very good job, did you?" The civilian's tone was frankly disbelieving. Biggles stiffened.

"That will do," he snapped to the civilian. "I don't know what sort of school you went to, Mr Figgis, or what your own personal moral code is, but here it's considered dishonourable to rat on a friend for something like this. The onus for disobeying an order lies fairly and squarely with Mr Hughes. Okay, thank you, Ginger. You can go now."

Taffy meanwhile had begun to sweat. He could feel it trickling down his face and back. He hoped with all his heart that he wasn't about to disgrace himself and pass out on the CO's mat.

Mr Figgis began to protest at being addressed thus by Biggles.

Algy watched in some amusement. If Fighis thought he could browbeat Biggles, he was backing the wrong horse. Algy knew that Raymond rather regularly soothed ruffled feathers left after some people in the intelligence community had encountered Biggles. Would he throw a Biggles type tantrum, Algy wondered.

"If Taffy told Ginger of his plans then it's obvious that he wasn't involved in the conspiracy at the Red Lion," he pointed out. "Otherwise he would have just sneaked out."

"Conspiracy?" repeated Taffy in confusion. "What conspiracy?" Then he remembered he hadn't been invited to speak. More sweat rolled down his brow.

The civilian harumphed. "As if you didn't know," he started, before encountering a look from Biggles that cased him to close his mouth.

"Taffy," began Biggles quietly. His use of Taffy's name gave the younger officer a rush of relief. Whatever was going on, he began to think Biggles believed Taffy was innocent. "I would like you to tell us, once again, everything that happened from the time you went out through the fence until you arrived back at the base gates. And stand at ease," he added as he took in Taffy's obvious distress.

Taffy went through the events slowly, even telling how he bribed an urchin to help him through the hole.

"Just a minute," Biggles frowned."Tell me where exactly the hole is. It needs to be fixed straight away. Algy, you see to it, will you?"

Algy departed to ensure Biggles' orders were carried out immediately. Biggles meanwhile looked at Taffy with a slight frown. There was no way Figgis would convince him that Taffy had knowingly been involved in this conspiracy. It was simply a matter of his being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was still disappointed (and quietly furious) with Taffy, but he was not going to give this puffed-up civilian the satisfaction of being privy to Taffy's future disciplinary action. For now, he had to get to the bottom of the mess they had uncovered and the Red Lion's involvement. Taffy was their best clue.

"Sit down," he said curtly as Taffy began to waver slightly, "and tell me of everyone you met or saw either at the Red Lion or on your journey there."

Taffy sank gratefully into the chair that Angus quickly shoved in his direction. He noted that Angus was most definitely looking unhappy then looked at Biggles and began his recital.

The civilian kept interrupting, trying to goad Taffy into altering his story. Finally, Biggles turned to him and threatened to have him excluded fom the interview unless he was quiet and allowed Taffy to finish speaking.

"Tell me again, who was the first person to offer you a drink at the Red Lion?" asked Biggles patiently. Taffy looked at him in confusion.

"Well, they all did," he said simply.

"All?" Biggles raised an eyebrow.

Taffy nodded. "Yes, sir. All at once, sir. They lined them up."

Biggles thought carefully. They had information that indicated the Red Lion was the centre of operations for the curious cake circulation operation. It was obvious that 666 had been targeted. He wondered just how co-incidental the urchin's arrival at the exact spot in the airfield where there was an unknown break in security. And how exactly had Taffy known about it? What had been going on under his very nose? Algy returned to report that Smyth was overseeing repairs to the fence.

There was also the matter of Godbett's farm and the mysterious messages sent under the disguise of Cheese Straws. He wondered if the Red Lion and the farm were connected.

Taffy did. "Get Toddy in here," Biggles said to Angus. "He knows more about the families around here than any of us."

The Civilian began to protest about the addition of another man to the interview but Biggles cut him short. "He's my adjutant," he said crisply. "And if you start doubting men like him, I suggest you pack it all in and start a mushroom farm, since you seem like things being kept in the dark."
