"I am waiting, Mr Hughes," Biggles' voice, if anything, was even quieter. Before Taffy could even think of an answer, Algy silently entered and murmured something into Biggles' ear. Biggles' face became even grimmer.

Taffy noted the change in his CO's expression and his heart sank. What now??

"Place a guard on this room, Mr Lacey," Biggles said in his most formal tones. His eyes were icy as he surveyed the hapless Taffy. "I will see Mr Hughes in my office as soon as the MO releases him."

Biggles left and Taffy eyed the Corporal put to guard over him. This seemed a little excessive.

Taffy reflected sadly on his long and varied list of adventures since joining 666. What could he possibly have done to cause this reaction?

He was to find out quite soon. Doc Lorton made his views known on pilots who gave him extra work to do by imbibing too much, when he had his work cut out looking after those who were in sick bay through battle wounds. He gave Taffy some aspirin and sent him to his doom.

Taffy marched dolefully into Biggles' office, halted, saluted and removed his cap. He was a little startled to see Algy, Bertie and Angus all present, as well as a rather insignificant looking civilian.

Taffy hoped that Biggles could find no fault with his uniform. His arm was still in plaster and his nose still very swollen, but he had sent a medical orderly for his batman to help dress him.

"Mr Hughes," began Biggles coolly, "We would like to hear your explanation of today's events. I'm particularly interested to know why you not only chose to disobey a direct order, but in particular, why you chose to go to the Red Lion."

Taffy said the first thing that came into his head. "It's got the best beer, sir. The Mucky Duck's brew tastes like it was dredged from a pond. A duck pond, sir."

Taffy thought he heard a snort from Angus but decided he couldn't have. Angus was looking far too dour to be finding anything remotely amusing in the situation.

"I suggest you save your flippancy for another time, Mr Hughes," Biggles told him, coldly. "And you have still yet to tell me why you disobeyed a direct order.

"It - er - it seemed like a good idea at the time, sir," said Taffy with great unoriginality. He knew he was digging himself deeper into his current hole, but he seemed to have no control over his tongue.

"Did you tell anyone what you were going to do?" Biggles thought he knew the answer, but he wanted to hear it from Taffy.

Taffy thought furiously. His brain was still somewhat the worse for wear, but was fairly certain he'd only discussed his plans with Ginger. He'd forgotten about the helpful urchin gang.

"Ginger knew, sir, I mean, that is, Flying Officer Hebblethwaite, sir."

Biggles strode to the door. "Ask Mr Hebblethwaite to come to my office immediately," he ordered Toddy.

Ginger had been expecting the summons. Although he hadn't done anything wrong he surreptitiously crossed his fingers.

"Mr Hughes tells me you knew he was going to go to the Red Lion, even though he would be disobeying a direct order. Is that correct?"

Ginger swallowed and stared at the wall above Biggles' shoulder. He could tell his commanding officer was not a happy man. "Yes, sir," he said simply.

"Then hy didn't you report him, boy?" The civilian interrupted testily.

Ginger bristled and constrained his temper with an effort.

"I told him he was … making a poor choice," he said slowly. "I tried to dissuade him."
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

"If you tried to dissuade him, you didn't do a very good job, did you?" The civilian's tone was frankly disbelieving. Biggles stiffened.

"That will do," he snapped to the civilian. "I don't know what sort of school you went to, Mr Figgis, or what your own personal moral code is, but here it's considered dishonourable to rat on a friend for something like this. The onus for disobeying an order lies fairly and squarely with Mr Hughes. Okay, thank you, Ginger. You can go now."

Taffy meanwhile had begun to sweat. He could feel it trickling down his face and back. He hoped with all his heart that he wasn't about to disgrace himself and pass out on the CO's mat.
