"You tried that once," Algy retorted, "and look what happened. You're much better off here. But I'll keep you in the loop and Ginger can be our go-between."

Biggles reluctantly sank back on his pillows.

"Just make sure he doesn't get lost," he muttered in resignation.

Algy made sure Ginger was equipped with a tracker, a compass and his mobile phone then sent him to get coffee from the coffee shop.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Half an hour went by and Ginger hadn’t returned. Algy sighed in resignation and went looking for him.

Just as he got to the lifts and stairs Ginger appeared, accompanied by one of the staff nurses.

'Oh?' Algy asked, accompanying it with his best smile. 'Can I get you a coffee whilst you tell me?' Nicola was rather stunning even in her nurse's uniform and Algy's motto was Carpe Diem, (or something very similar).

"I've just had one with your colleague," Nicola refused politely. "Ive only got - couple of minutes now or sister will be chasing me."

'What do you want to share with me?' Algy asked, still with his best smile.

"The man that you brought off the Moor the one with the broken ankle. His Uncle came to c ollect him." The nurse looked a Algy almost pleadingly. "He didn't want to go with him. Not really."

Algy frowned. 'Do you know where this uncle took him? Remember, I'm a police officer so you don't have to be discreet with me.'

"Back to his house. In London," was the reply. "He had to give an address. Also, the name of a doctor who would be seeing him. He's in Harley Street apparently."

Algy thanked her, still with his best smile. Nicola made her excuses and hastily returned to the ward.

"Let's go check on Biggles," said Algy (wondering if he'd just been given the brush-off). "If he's awake we can bring him up to date and see what he wants us to do."

Biggles, when awoken, was inclined to wash his hands of his erstwhile trainee. 'Is he actually anything to do with us now?' he asked. 'He's not in our care; he's on the sick list and won't be back with us until long after he should have finished his placement; he shouldn't have been with us in the first place; HR are responsible for him, not us. What can we actually do?'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Just then Biggles’ phone rang. It was Raymond. He tersely acknowledged that the team had successfully wrapped up the case of the missing financier and son, asked how long before Biggles would Ben out of hospital, said he needed to see him ASAP and did Biggles know that Horace had an uncle - an important uncle, and what on earth had Biggles done to Horace?

Before Biggles could answer, a nurse came acros. In her most officious voice she said loudly that whoever called would just have to call back tomorrow. Biggles was still feverish and he must not be disturbed.

The nurse removed the phone from Biggles, cancelling Raymond's call and placed it on the bedside table.

"Now Inspector, you are here to rest. No work, the doctor said." As she sailed out, she winked conspiratorially at Algy who smiled appreciatively and turned to Biggles.

"Want me to ring him back?"

"Are you kidding?" asked Biggles incredulously. "Let him stew for a while."

At that precise second, Algy's phone rang. He looked at it. "The Air Commodore," he said ruefully, looking at the screen before he answered it.

With Biggles grinning his approval, Algy let the call go to voicemail.

After Raymond's third attempt to ring Biggles in five minutes, Algy asked the Ward Sister to answer and take a message. This she did.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Yes, I can give a message to Mr Lacey the minute he comes to visit the Inspector," she said, with a wink at Algy, "but that won't be for as few hours yet. He was told the Inspector wasn't to be disturbed."

'I can't help that you are in the United States,' the nurse said severely. 'You're not his next of kin and his doctor isn't in the Us of A, she's right here and she's ordering several hours of quiet for Inspector Bigglesworth before she'll review his situation.

The Sister ended with an assurance that she would deliver his message to Mr Lacey the very minute he next stepped into the ward and rung off.

"And now, Mr Lacey," she continued with a smile, "the doctor did order complete rest for the Inspector. You can leave him with us quite safely, you know."

"It's not your actions I'm concerned about, it's his," Algy retorted. "I recommend you handcuff him to his bed. I've got a set here I can lend you." He took his cuffs from his pockets and dangled them in front of Sister, grinning widely.

'That's very tempting,' the nurse purred, ' but I don't think doctor would be pleased. I'll remember you have them and try to think of a use for them.'
