Their car wouldn't start. A quick examination of the engine showed that various bits had been unscrewed and removed, presumably by whoever had been shooting at them. Consuelo groaned. 'It will have to be my Landrover. Keys are in the kitchen, Algy.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Algy quickly returned with the Landrover keys. To everyone's relief, the tyres weren't flat and the engine started immediately. Everyone fitted in more comfortably than they would have in the car and Algy soon arrived safely at the local hospital where Consuelo, despite her protests, was told she would need to be admitted for overnight observation. The doctor kindly agreed to allow her daughter to stay with her.

The doctor took one look at Biggles and spoke sharply. "You look as if you should be in hospital yourself," he declared."Are those recent stitches?"

"Not really," replied Biggles as Algy rolled his eyes.

"And the lady you brought in. That's a bullet wound she has. I will have to report it to the police," the doctor went on.

Biggles nodded. 'I'll be making a report, too.' He showed his Police pass. 'But now I have to get this gentleman onto a plane for London.'

"I'm sure the world's not going to end, Inspector, if you don't personally see the gentleman on to the plane," retorted the doctor, apparently totally unimpressed by Biggles' Scotland Yard status.

'I'd rather not take that chance,' Biggles grinned, leaving to walk wearily back to Consuelo's Landover and hence the airport.

Biggles and Algy were soon at the airport and using his police ID, Biggles was able to get Mr Berger a confirmed seat on the next flight to London, leaving in half an hour. Once the machine was in the air, the two Air Police walked back to the Landrover.

"Now all we have to do is collect Horace, find out what he's really been up to, return the Landrover to Consuelo, and the case will be closed," said Biggles leaning back wearily in the passenger's seat.

"It sounds really simple when you put it like that," Algy smiled. "Now, we'll just collect Ginger And Bertie and get you back to the hotel. You should really change your clothes." In reality Algy was hoping to get Biggles to lie down for a while.

Biggles decided a nap would clear his head and help him to deal with Horace. After all, Horace was safe in the hospital and not going anywhere. Leaving Algy to ring up to see how he was, Biggles stripped off his borrowed clothes and crawled into bed.

Algy, having discovered that Horace had been discharged into the care of his uncle, was in a quandary. He didn't want to wake Biggles, but knew he would want to know.

Algy decided to have a go at tracking down Horace's uncle before waking Biggles. He might as well have all the information ready for him before he woke him.

He contacted Gaskin from Special Branch and called in one of the many favours that man now owed them. When Gaskin rang him back, he whistled softly at the information he was given.

"Do you want me to keep any eye on the place?" Gaskin asked.

"Although, I think that the diplomatic protection squad have been there for some while, recently" Gaskin added.

Algy cursed. A diplomatic presence meant trouble. He had no option but to wake Biggles.

To Algy’s dismay, Biggles was running a fever, perspiring and seemed to only be semi-conscious.

He called the doctor who promptly admitted him to hospital. Algy thought about ringing the Air Commodore.

But decided it wasn't quite urgent enough to justify disturbing Raymond at his conference again.

So he rang Gaskin and asked him to keep an eye on the house where Horace was currently recuperating. His next step was to Google everything he could on Horace's Uncle.

To his surprise, he was able to find out quite a bit of information, which he copied - as well as some very interesting photographs.
But it didn't really explain why or what Horace was doing as a trainee in the SAP, but a few ideas came to Algy's mind as he worked.
There were obviously other factors that needed to be uncovered.

Especially Horace’s uncle’s curious connection to Raymond.

Algy thought that Horace and his uncle had been very lucky that Raymond was, to all extent and purpose, uncontactable at his conference. If the order to have a management trainee at short notice due to sickness in another department had crossed his desk, things would have been very different. Now, he needed to think about this connection a little more. He would have to tread carefully.

"First of all, Algy, I need to get myself out of this damned hospital," Biggles stated firmly.
