Consuelo sighed. She would tell this annoying adventurer who was now a Scotland Yard Inspector of Police and whom, she suspected, she could not outbluff. She opened her mouth to tell him she would agree when a sharp crack was heard and she fell to the floor, clutching her shoulder.

Biggles pulled Mr Berger down as another shot came through the now broken window. He crawled over to where Consuelo had fallen.

A quick look revealed the shot had been wide and had actually gone through the fleshy part of her upper arm. It was bleeding profusely and her face was white with shock. “Now I will tell you all I know,” she said as she gritted her teeth against the pain.

"First of all" said Biggles "You need some first aid !" and he suited actions to the word.

The door burst open and Algy came in. He had a gun in his hand. "What's happening here? Ginger and Bertie are chasing someone one of the constables saw in the grounds."

"Someone just shot my mother," sobbed Consuelo's daughter dramatically. "Will Ging-er and Ber-tie catch this evil man?"

A nice clean wound,' Biggles said approvingly as he tore a strip from his shirt to act as a bandage.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Will she be all right? She's not going to die?" asked the daughter, who seemed to be bordering on hysterics, Algy thought. Biggles ignored the outburst and concentrated on bandaging the wound.

'Get your fool head out of the way of that window,' snapped her doting mother.

Biggles finished his first aid and secured the makeshift bandage. “We need to get you to the hospital for professional attention. But before we do, can you tell me who is shooting at you?”

Before Consuelo could speak, her daughter chimed in.

"It is Juan Pablo Altaza," she said. "He is a banker in Bolivia but Mama thinks he is linked to the local Mafia. Because she is an arms dealer he thinks she can be bought." She knelt beside her mother and took one of her hands in hers. "It is time they knew, Mama. We should have told them when we first came."

Consuelo sighed. “You are correct. Juan Altaza thinks he can buy me. He wants to know all my clients’ names so he can control all the arms deals I’ve been negotiating.”

"So where does Mr Berger fit in?" Biggles asked, nodding towards the financier who was sitting in a chair, quite dejected.

'He has business interests in a country which there may be plans to destabilise and he was trying to find out more about what might happen to protect his interests and his workers,' Consuelo shrugged, 'so he asked me as I'm on a couple of committees with his wife.'

"Why didn't you tell me this before? This could well have been avoided. But there's no time for that now. We need to get you to a doctor and Mr Berger to his son. Algy, stay here with them while I go and see if the coast is clear."

The coast wasn't clear. A shot whistled into the door jamb as Biggles peered carefully around the door.

Biggles hastily shut the door and returned to the others.

“I still there another way out that that lot out there don’t know about?”

"There's a cellar with a coal chute," Consuelo replied."But you'd need to get to the kitchen first."

"When you tried to get out of the room just now, you were shot at," Consuelo reminded him.

Biggles stared at her.

“ARe you saying that that we have to go out that door to get to the kitchen?” He asked incredulously. “Where do these other doors go?” Biggles pointed to three other doors, one in each of the room’s internal walls.

"Ones a cupboard, one's a small cloakroom and the other leads into the sitting room " Consuelo replied. "You might get out through there, but either way, to get to the kitchen you need to go down the hall you came through on your way here."

Biggles picked up a heavy wood occasional table and unscrewed its legs. Opening the door carefully, he thrust the table top across the passage then crawled across the passage with the table top acting both to conceal his exact whereabouts and as a while. A quick twist, and the kitchen door was opened and Biggles was inside.

He hoped Algy would be able to hold the fort while he escaped through the coal inlet, find Bertie and Ginger, alert the local police, and call up some transport to get Consuelo to the hospital. He had forgotten all about Horace.

Horace, despite his broken leg and arm, was desperate to leave the hospital. He was really concerned that blood thirsty haggises would find it an attractive place to spend time and the doors were always opening for visitors so the haggises would be able to gain entry, too. Additionally, he wanted to keep well away from his uncle, whom, he thought, would blow his cover. He gritted his teeth and worked hard to persuade the nurses that he would be able to look after himself at home, home being the hotel where he could call room service for all his meals.
