Biggles inclined his head and indicated this was acceptable. He was curious to see how his contact in the Home Office would react to hearing from the Missing Millionnaire.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Judging from the expression on Mr Berger’s face and the subsequent conversation the Home Office was telling him about his brother. Mr Berger put the phone down and turned to Biggles. “You’re to take me to my son right away,” he declared. “I understand we will be flying?”

'Is your Auster airworthy now?' Biggles called through to Algy. 'Someone was shooting at it,' he explained to Mr Berger, 'and mine burnt up when the trainee landed it.'

“Where were you when you were shot?” Mr Berger suddenly looked interested.

'In the Auster,' Biggles replied vaguely, hoping Mr Berger would have some idea of why they'd been shot at.

'To the East of Inverness. Why?' Biggles rapped out, 'Do you know of a reason for someone to shoot at an aeroplane?'

Mr Berger turned his head towards Consuelo. “My dear, it seems you hit the wrong plane.”

"Well, how was I to know?" retorted Consuelo, throwing her hands in the air. "You told me to shoot down a little aeroplane. That's what I did."

"And when you went to the hospital to find out who you had shot down, you discovered it was me," Biggles grinned. "No wonder you acted as you did."

'I thought I had the right man,' Consuelo shot back. 'I knew you were an adventurer. It was quite possible you were involved. I had no idea you were police now.' Consuelo had never quite forgiven Biggles for getting Algy out of Bolivia before she could marry him.

"You were told," Biggles said coldly. "And you only had to ring Scotland Yard to verify it. Do you have a licence for the firearm you used?"

"To the UK?" Biggles asked, wondering why he had never heard of her in this context.

'I specialise in South American contracts. Mainly I work abroad. I am reputable.'

Biggles wasn't sure whether to believe her or not.

"Would you mind explaining what you have to do with Mr Berger and his situation for us again?" asked Biggles looking from one to the other. "Do you mind my asking exactly what line of business you're in, Mr Berger?"

'And a lot of people are wanting to know, what happened to the proceeds of the Charity Auction,' Biggles added, watching Berger closely.

Berger looked surprised. “Consuelo looked after distributing that to the nominated charities.”

"You do realise that you're all going to have to come with me," Biggles replied, sighing.

"To Scotland Yard," Biggles said."I 'm sorry, Consuelo, but you may be a bona fide arms dealer, but unless you have a licence to use a gun in a public place, you were committing an offence. And there's the question of shooting at an aeroplane, injuring a police officer and obstructing a police officer in their enquiries by refusing to cooperate when asked to do so. If you come willingly I won't arrest you."

In fact, Biggles didn't want to arrest Consuelo at all, but he was fed up of her calm assumption she could do what she liked and get away with it.

Biggles shook his head. "I can't talk to your lawyer unless it's under certain circumstances and is officially recorded, you know. This is turning into a high profile case and things must be done by the book. So I'm afraid you only have two choices. Come with me and Mr Berger voluntarily, or go under arrest, in which case you can ask for your lawyer to see you at Scotland Yard. Which is it to be?"

Consuelo considered her options carefully which were more complicated than Biggles had described. Depending on the outcome of the current revolution in Columbia, she might have diplomatic immunity but she would almost certainly be deported from Britain if she claimed it. What would be her best course?

Biggles sensed her dilemma. "Or you could come clean and tell me everything now," Biggles suggested, "and I'll take it from there. But you'll have to be quick. Mr Berger needs to go and see his son."
