And why had Biggles said Horace could fly if he couldn't?

A police constable appeared, ushering in Consuelo and her daughter. "I found these two watching from a car in the road," he explained. "But they say they live here."

'They do,' chorused everyone in the kitchen. 'Algy politely pulled out chairs for them to sit at, around their own kitchen table.

Algy's phone played "The Grand March" from Aida. Biggles' text had arrived.

"He's being released," he said, after glancing at the screen. "I bet he's discharged himself against medical advice. He wants one of us to pick him up."

"You'd better go, Ginger. Don't keep him waiting," grinned Algy as he handed Ginger the keys to the car they had rented.

Ginger sped off, glad to be able to do something positive. When he arrived at the hospital he found Biggles dressed and waiting impatiently. A nurse bustled up to him. "Your medication," she said, unsmilingly. "We've been through it all so you know what to take. And don't bust your stitches."

Biggles frowned when he heard Mr Berger, the missing financier, had been found. 'Has anyone told him about his son yet?' he asked. 'That was one of the reasons we were looking for him, as well as the missing charity ball millions.'

"Not yet," Algy replied. "I haven't had any chance to speak to him yet. Consuelo commandeered him and took him into the study. They're still there now."

'Ring the Yard and get someone to text us with an update,' Biggles ordered. 'We'll pick it up on the way to Consuelo's. Has he said anything about why he went missing yet?'

"We're already at Consuelo's," Algy pointed out. "Ginger's just driven you here from the hospital. And no, nothing's been said because we've been waiting for you to come and take charge." Biggles thought Algy sounded a little unreasonably exasperated.

"Look, Biggles are you sure you're well enough to be out of hospital?" Algy went on."No, don't answer that. Silly question. Of course you're sure. Whether the doctors think so or not is a moot point."

'We came out to Consuelo's house, spotted Mr Berger, introduced ourselves, called off all the searches, sent Ginger to pick you up and are waiting to see what you want to do,' Algy summarised.

"First thing I think is to tell Mr Berger about his s on," Biggles decided. "Where's the study? What are they talking about in there?"

Biggles did. He found the study after opening two other rooms. Mr Berger and Consuelo's daughter were seated on a small sofa. Consuelo was stood behind a desk, some papers in her hand.

They all looked up as Biggles walked in, followed by Algy. Bertie and Ginger had taken up better surveillance posts outside.

"Who are you?" demanded Mr Berger looking at Biggles warily.

"I'm the man tasked with finding you," Biggles answered calmly and introduced himself. "Although no doubt Consuelo has already told you about me."

Mr Berger sprang to his feet. "Yes! You are a fortune hunter. A man who has raided precious, cultural, heritage sites and taken the treasure for your own! How could I possibly trust you!!"

"Scotland Yard?" Mr Berger's voice almost cracked with incredulity. He stared from Biggles to Consuelo and back again. "Can I believe you?"

Biggles' smile disappeared. "There's one way to find out. I could arrest you and take you there for questioning. Maybe you would believe me then?"

Biggles handed it over. Mr Berger inspected it minutely and handed it back grudgingly. He then took out his phone. “You won’t mind if I check with someone I know in the Home Office, will you?” He told Biggles.
