But pretty soon his drugs kicked in and he dozed off. Biggles, hearing the snores, carefully peeked at him then slid out of bed. He wanted to phone Algy.

But he decided he wouldn't risk making the call from the room. He didn't trust Horace and he didn't trust his snoring. He decided to text Algy instead.

He did and waited impatiently for a reply.

It was just as well for Biggles' peace of mind that he didn't know what was happening with Algy, Bertie and Ginger.

Algy, Bertie and Ginger had gone to keep an eye on Consuelo's house which stood in a remote location outside Inverness. Unfortunately, the place they had chosen to hide was near the river and there was a very cross kelpie objecting to their presence.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

There was a disturbance in the river beside them and suddenly they found themselves sprayed with water whilst an unearthly howling began.

"What the..." All three airmen leapt away quickly, and clamped their hands over their ears.

The kelpie's tail striking the water sounded like thunder as it summoned a flood.

Two policemen, who had been ordered to keep an eye on the house by their Inspector came running up.

"We should arrest you three for disturbing the peace!" announced one policeman crossly.

"Never mind that,". declared Algy crossly," as he noticed everything calm down again. "What have you found out so far?"

"That's for our Inspector to hear," returned one of the local policeman who was determined to be unimpressed by the Scotland Yard imports.

"Fine," Algy said, not giving the policeman the chance to argue which he obviously wanted. He turned to Ginger and Bertie. "We'll do things our way. C'mon."

Ignoring the postulating policemen, the three airmen headed quietly towards the house. Either the kelpie didn't like them leaving, or it didn't like the local police because it let out an unearthly howl.

'Now then, Kevin,' one of the policemen said to the kelpie. 'You behave yourself. Your antisocial behaviour order still has a month to run, remember.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Kevin subsided, with a final huge splash that left the local police rather damp. The noise had attracted attention from the house. The front door was flung open.

Algy recognised Consuelo. Behind her, stood a man. "You told me it was quiet here," he was complaining. "No one would find me here, you said."

Was this the missing millionaire financier they were supposed to be looking for? Wondered Algy.

He looked like the man they were searching for.

Algy walked up to the door. 'Scotland Yard,' he introduced himself. 'There are a lot of people looking for you, sir.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"How did you find me?" the man asked, suddenly looking very tired and careworn.

'There's a huge search going on,' Algy answered. 'I better call off the air search and the mountain rescue people.'

The man looked embarrassed. "Oh, dear....I hadn't realised. Look, you'd better come in and I think I'd better explain."

Algy instructed the local police to contact their superiors and cancel the searches. He'd like to have requested no further action to be taken, but given the importance of the man in front of him, knew that the brass would be on their way as soon as they heard he'd been found.

And there was also the question of who shot Biggles and why.

And there still questions that needed answering about Horace. Who was he really working for and why had he not been honest with them about his flying?
