"Bertie," commanded Biggles quietly. "Take care of Smyth. But do not breath in any of the air immediately around him."

"Just what is going on, sir?" Bertie asked. "Everyone is acting very strangely."

"I wish I could tell you I knew all the answers, Bertie, but I don't. Just do as I said and once you've got him to Medical section, go straight to my office. I'll meet you there." Biggles wanted to have another, closer look around his Spitfire.

"Just a tic, sir," Bertie stood his ground. "Has this anything to do with Fliss's letters? The ones you snaffled?"

Biggles sighed. Bertie's empty-headed act hid a very sharp and astute brain.

Biggles couldn't lie. "Just do as I ask, old chap, and I'll explain everything shortly."

Bertie felt his heart drop to somewhere in the vicinity of his feet. But he did as Biggles had asked.

He went straight to his CO's office and sat and waited. Or, to be more precise, he walked up and down the small space while he waited. Somehow, his Fliss appeared to be implicated in whatever was going on. Was he tge only one who didn't know about it?

Biggles arrived, closed his office door and went to stand by the window. He looked at Bertie sympathetically. How could he possibly break the news?

Directly. There was nothing else for it. "It probably isn't her," he said, when he'd finished explaining to a stunned Bertie what had happened. "The letters were given to someone else to post."

"And, you may Not discuss with anyone what I have just told you, Is that understood ?" Biggles added, wary of alerting the enemy that their plot had started to unravel.

'In fact," continued Biggles, warming to his subject, "it would be a good idea for you to continue your budding relationship with Fliss."

"Is that an order, sir?" There was a glint in Bertie's eye and a certain stiffening of his body that warned Biggles he was seeing a side of Bertie he had never seen before.

Biggles considered him carefully. He valued Bertie, despite his sometimes annoying eccentricities.

“I’ll leave interpretation up to you,”Biggles said.

“And am I expected to report everything she says and does back to you, sir.

"That won't be necessary." Biggles shuddered at the thought. "I am certain you would, however, report anything that might remotely have a bearing on National security."

He was relying on the lady the Air Commodore had sent who would meet Fliss off the train to be able to get all the answers.

"Is that all sir?" Bertie asked stiffly. His demeanour had not altered, Biggles noted with a sigh.

Biggles nodded his dismissal and watched Bertie leave, before he sat down and lit a cigarette. Damn women, he thought, as he struck a match.

Bertie decided he needed to work off his anger. He was surprised at the turmoil of emotions his interview with Biggles had caused.

He did something he hadn't done in years; since he was a Flight Cadet at Cranwell, in fact. He went to the small gym and stripping off his tunic and shirt, donned a pair of boxing gloves.

He was working his anger out on the punching bag when Tug entered. "Why are you attacking that lovely punching bag, Bertie?" he asked, rushing up to protect the latest object of his passion. Unfortunately, he got in the path of one of Bertie's more energetic right crosses.

Bertie's anger dissipated immediately as he threw himself down beside Tug, who had fallen to the ground, apparently poleaxed.

" Here, I say, old boy, are you all right?"

But Tug was out for the count. Bertie groaned. How would he explain this to Biggles?

"Tell me," Biggles said, with biting sarcasm, as Bertie stood in front of him after Tug had been taken to sick bay, "is this a circus I'm running, because it certainly looks like it from where I'm sitting? Either that, or a madhouse. It's difficult to tell at the moment."

Bertie, wisely, chose not to answer Biggles' question, deeming it to have been rhetorical. Biggles ran a hand through his hair and sighed.

"Okay, Bertie, I can see it was an accident. But sometimes it seems some of my officers have more their fair share of accidents."
