Worried, they hurried home. Biggles approached the flat with caution, opening the door gingerly and peering round before going any further.

Ginger wasn't in sight.

'He can't have got lost between here and the office,' Biggles muttered, stepping inside to examine his flat.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Ginger hadn’t become lost on his way to the flat. He had become lost inside the flat. When Biggles cautiously opened the door, he stepped into a very changed scene.

All his possessions were slightly out of focus and he couldn't touch any of them. Nor could he sit in a chair whilst he wondered what to do.

This disorientated him so much he left the flat again and stood outside on the landing while he tried to work, out what had happened. Or rather, what the elf had make happen.

Algy and Bertie soon joined him and asked why he was still outside the flat. Biggles explained what he’d just experienced. Algy pursed his lips, shrugged and pushed open the door.

And shut it again, very quickly.

"It's got to go" Biggles said through gritted teeth.

"But, first we have to get in, my old bean" Bertie managed, as he took a turn at sneaking a look around the door.

"How about cutting the power to the flat?" suggested Algy. "That should cut the lights which might make it easier to see. We could borrow a torch from the Janitor."

Biggles agreed and - after a brief consultation - the janitor dutifully unscrewed the fuses for their unit.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

What about night vision goggles?" Algy suggested again. "We've got to do something."

There was a tinkling sound from withing the flat. Once more, Biggles opened the door. The flat looked normal. Normal except for the walls having been painted red and stencilled with holly leaves. There was an angel blowing a trumpet on his bedroom door Biggles noticed, as he stepped into the room.

Ginger was sitting at the table, looking a little bemused.

"What happened?" Biggles asked him, still a bit stunned.

Ginger opened his mouth, closed it again and shook his head. 'It was like that time I accidentally swallowed water full of hallucinogens.'

Biggles looked all around trying to find the elf. He finally saw it sitting on the bookshelf. Biggles picked it up carefully and stared at it. "Wilks," he said slowly through gritted teeth, "I know you're behind this. I will figure out how you're doing what it is you're doing, if I have to pull this elf apart stitch by stitch."

The elf twitched rather violently.

They were interrupted by a knock at the door. It was Mabel from downstairs, selling cards hand made by the Brownies to raise funds. Biggles could be relied upon to make a decent donation and not take any of the cards.

'Oh, how pretty,' she exclaimed, seeing the room. 'What a lot of effort you've gone to.'

"And you've got an elf!" She exclaimed. "Does it play naughty tricks on you?" she patted it on the head. "It's a very lucky elf, living with you."

“Oh, I can’t take the elf,” rejoined Mabel, staring at Biggles in surprise. “The elf has come to spend Christmas with you, lucky fellow,” she finished with a laugh.

Biggles had the grace to look a little shame-faced at this.

'We've always to be ready to leave at a moment's notice,' he countered. 'It might be better with someone who will definitely be here over Christmas.'

But Mabel was adamant and forcibly brought his attention to her original purpose by rattling her tin under his nose.
