'Where's the speaker?' asked Biggles. 'I bet Wilks is responsible for this. He's just waiting for me to start chatting to the elf.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Then don't," Algy replied. "If it is Wilks it will annoy the heck out of him. Although the tricks tge elf will, play are likely to be just that much worse. You know Wilks when he's riled."

Biggles picked the elf up and examined it before placing it behind the coal scuttle facing the wall.

'Will a spark from the fire reach it?' Bertie asked. 'You don't want Elf and Safety on your case.'

"And you should be kind to it," Algy added, picking the elf up and putting it on the cushion he had arranged for it earlier. "The nicer you are to it, the nicer they are to you. You don't want to wake up one morning and find all your cigarettes shredded, or you handcuffed to your bed, do you?"

Biggles rolled his eyes, poured an egg cupful of sherry out and placed it next to the elf. 'There! Are you satisfied now? It can have my mince pie when Mrs Sykes sends em' up, too.'

It was only the second of December, but Biggles had already eaten enough mince pies to last him until the following Christmas.

He went to work and forgot about the Elf. He tried to forget about Christmas too, but it seemed to be everywhere. He'd already vetoed tge putting up of the decorations in the office for at least another ten days, but the rest of the building has mo such inhibitions.

The typing Pool were festive in antler headbands and Santa's helpers outfits. Even Raymond had his Christmas jumper on.

'Bah humbug,' said Biggles, picking up the post.

Most of which were early Christmas cards.

Biggles read all the enclosed letters to see what his friends were up to, then put the cards in his desk drawer. It was too early to put them up on the mantelpiece.

That evening they all arrived back at Mount Street together. The work day had become rather hectic and the had all forgotten the puzzle of the Elf and the unexplained gifts. But when they walked in to the room, they stopped as one and stared.

"I thought he was only supposed to do mischief overnight," Ginger exclaimed, looking at the living room.

"I told you to be nice to it," Algy said, picking up an overturned chair with a sigh.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

"I gave it some sherry," protested Biggles, wondering what Mrs Symes was going to say to the mess, particularly the overturned potted plant which had spread it's soil everywhere.

We’d better clean this up before Mrs Symes sees it,” added Biggles with a sigh of his own. They set to and had managed to restore some semblance of normality when Algy looked all around.

“Where’s the elf?” He asked.

"It's here." Ginger came out of the bathroom carrying it.

Ginger giggled.'He was sitting on a pile of frozen peas in the bath with 'I've pea'd myself' spelt out with peas.'

Ginger sat the elf back on his cushion. "We're going to have to give you a name," he said, "Unless you tell us what it is."'

Biggles rolled his eyes again. "You'd better go and clean the bath out," he told Ginger. "We don't want Mrs Symes to see it."

'Right, Mr Bushy Evergreen,' Biggles said sternly. 'We'll have no more behaviour like that. If you can't behave, you'll have to go.'

"Dinner, I think," Biggles said. "We'll have a takeaway delivered." He didn't say it but everyone knew he was reluctant to leave the flat.

There was a knock on the door. 'Delivery for Mr Tigglesworp,' the delivery driver said, holding a large bag from which the aroma of spices drifted pleasingly into the flat.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Ginger didn't even try to correct the driver as he paid him, although he stored the name away for future reference. Tigglesworp was a doozy.

He sniffed the bag appreciatively as he carried it through to the table.

'Where did that come from?' Biggles asked. 'I haven't phoned the order through yet.'
