'Is he alright?' he enquired anxiously.

Mrs Christmas looked at him with her cold as ice eyes. 'You care?' she asked.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Of course I care!" Biggles retorted, shocked that anyone could think he was unfeeling.

Elphino sat gingerly up on Biggles's pillow. 'I think I'm allergic to the feathers in your pillows,' he announced. 'They've made me feel awfully sick and stopped me from finishing my report.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Biggles' lips twitched. "Oh, dear. Does that mean Santa won't be visiting?"

'I'll have a word,' Elphino winked. 'Me and him, we're like that.' He crossed his fingers. He seemed to have forgotten about Mrs Christmas.

Mrs Claus seemed to think she had been forgotten too. She moved into his field of vision. The looked on the Elf's face was a picture.

'Time to go home, I think, Elphino,' she grated. 'I think you are going to be grounded for the next century or two until you have mended your ways.'

"But I go home when Mr Claus visits," Elphino protested, "and he can't visit yet because I haven't finished my report."

'I will make a report,' Mrs Christmas told him. Biggles felt very sorry for the elf.

Although he had to admit Elphino had brought some of it on himself. Mrs Claus guessed what he was thinking. "Just like one of your junior officers," she said briskly. "He needs a firm and guiding hand."

'Could I watch over him to enable him to finish his report?' Biggles asked. 'It would allow you to get on with your duties on what must be a very busy day for you.'

"That's what I'd do with a Junior Officer," he explained when Mrs Claus turned her steely gaze on to him. "Make him finish the job he started."

Elphino tried to look contrite as Mrs Christmas considered Biggles's offer. Behind him, Biggles could feel Algy projecting the thought 'You must be mad!' in his direction.

"He probably is mad," Mrs Claus said, permitting a slight smile in Algy's direction, "but consciencious, as I'm coming to realise. Very well, I'll allow it, under certain conditions."

Mrs Claus held up a finger. Elphino held his breath.

One...the report must be written legibly at one sitting within the space of two of your hours. Two..." Mrs Claus held up another finger...

"No alcoholic refreshments, not that Elphino would want any at the moment. That little humbug I gave him will make sure of that. And three......" There was a pause."For goodness sake, put on a little Christmas music! It's Christmas Eve! I've seen more life in a mausoleum."

'Did you enjoy it?' Ginger asked hopefully. 'I need to practise more but I'm definitely getting better.' He was definitely less intimidated by Mrs Christmas than the others.

She reminded him of his aunt, whom he got along with rather well.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

“At least you do try to bring some Christmas spirit to the place,” commented Mrs Claud with what might have passed for a smile. Biggles was indignant.

“We’ve been so taken up with caring for Elphino, along with our jobs, we haven’t had time for much else!”

"Elphino was supposed to generate the Christmas Spirit," Mrs Claus stated,"but unfortunately, he chose the wrong sort. And he was supposed to be seen but not heard. But never mind, it's not too late." She waved her hand and jolly Christmas music filled the room.

Biggles gritted his teeth as the strains of 'Do they know it's Christmas,' filled the room. Bertie and Algy began singing along.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'
