The others stood up as he showed her into the living room. She looked at the clock. "As if we didn't have enough to do without this," she grated. "Less than 24 hours to go and I have to sort this out. I told Mr Claus Elphino should be kept on Home Duties after the unfortunate affair with the Guardsmen at the Palace but he insisted Elphino had another chance." She turned to Biggles."That's why you ended up with him. Couldn't afford to let him go to a house with children in it."

'Yes, Ma'am,' chorused the men. 'Would you like a glass of sherry and a mince pie?' Biggles offered.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"That's very kind of you, young man, but I think I'd better see Elphino, if you would take me to him."

Biggles led Mrs Claus into his bedroom where Elphino hiccoughed happily to himself on Biggles's pillow. His quill was trying to write a Limerick but one or the other of them had run into difficulties on the second line.

Mrs Claus looked at the elf and tut-tutted. She turned to Biggles. "Do you have some bicarbonate of soda, lemon juice, vinegar and marmite?" She asked him.

'I'm not sure about the marmite,' Biggles confessed, 'but I'll get some from the neighbours if Ginger has finished his pot.'

"I don't need a lot, just a smear of it will be sufficient," Mrs Claus said, advancing towards the figure on the bed.

Elphino waved a lazy hand and a bottle rose into the air and tipped to pour its contents straight into his mouth. Limoncello, Biggles noted. He wondered where that had come from. He couldn't recall ever having been given a bottle.

Mrs Claus's mouth set in a thin, straight line. She turned to Biggles. "Would you please be so good as to fetch the items I asked for?"

Biggles beat a hasty retreat, gave Ginger the list and sent him to fetch the items. He returned to his bedroom door, wanting to see Mrs Christmas deal with the elf.

But all he could see was the back of Mrs Claus. It seemed that she was simply standing looking down at the elf. He felt a nudge at his elbow. Ginger thrust tge items Mrs Claus had asked for, into his hands. As he went forwards to give them to her he sensed that the other three were now crowded around the doorway.

Mrs Christmas made a twisting motion with her hands. The caps flew off the bottles and they shook themselves into Elphino's mouth. The marmite took a moment to fall, but did obey. Elphino bucked and moaned on Biggles's pillow, but Mrs Christmas had her hand firmly over his mouth so he couldn't spit the ingredients out.

The four airmen held their breaths. It took huge restraint on Biggles' part not to go and help the little elf. Finally, his struggles stopped. Mrs Claus felt in her pocket with one hand and withdrew what looked like to Biggles to be a peppermint humbug.

“You will take your medicine like a true Christmas Elf,” stated Mrs Claud grimly. SHe pushed the humbug into Elphino’s mouth and held it firmly shut. The elf squirmed and screwed his face up in obvious distaste.

Ginger found it hard to believe that Elphino didn't like humbugs. Later, he was to discover it wasn't peppermint, but charcoal and milk of magnesia flavoured. Elphino would not touch alcohol for quite a while after having eaten one of those.

But in the present, when the Elf had finally taken his medicine, Mrs Claus turned to Biggles. We'll let him rest now for a while. I believe you mentioned sherry and mince pies?"

Biggles gulped and nodded. He pulled out the chair closest to the fire for Mrs Christmas and poured her a glass of his best sherry. Ginger ran to Mrs Symes's kitchen to fetch the mince pies and florentines, arranging them on the nicest floral, gold edged plate he could see.

"What excellent pies!" Mrs Claus enthused after eating one in two bites. "I can't cook myself, although everybody seems to think I do. Luckily, I have a team of Elves who can, otherwise the whole place would go on strike."

'Have you a big team,' Biggles asked. Mrs Christmas made him very nervous and he hoped she wouldn't stay long. He offered her another mince pie.

She nodded vigorously. "Yes, we have a lot of mouths to feed. Excellent sherry, too,"she beamed hopefully. "Mr Claus said you all had very good taste and he was right."

She declined with a wave of her hand. "You should stop smoking, young man, it's not good for you, not good at all." She set down her empty glass and stood up. "Let's see how he's doing, shall we?"

Biggles was happy to escort her back to his bedroom. (This is not a sentence I am able to write with great frequency so I shall enjoy whilst I can. )

The first thing Biggles noticed was that the hiccoughing had stopped. In fact, all sound had stopped. Biggles hoped fervently that Mrs Claus's rough and ready treatment of the little elf hadn't been too much for him.
