Biggles dug his heels in and braced himself.

'Slowly,' he admonished. 'Let's sneak up and get a look at the situation rather than take precipitate action.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

“Look before you leap,” Biggles told him.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

"Oh," said the boy, looking as if this was a totally new concept to him. "Where's the fun in that?"

"Perhaps none, but it's better than being dead," Biggles answered soberly.

'A full risk assessment is very important if the situation allows,' Biggles told him. 'Thought before action.'

"I'm always telling him he doesn't think, Uncle Biggles," Cleopatra butt in, "but can we go and rescue that lady now?"

"No, you most certainly can't," Lettice told her firmly.

'Shhhh,' Biggles admonished. 'We're nearly there. Stay here whilst I see what's happening.'

Biggles crept silently forward. So did the twins.

So did Lettice and Dickpa. Algy stayed where Biggles had told him.

'Who are you trying to warn?' hissed Biggles.

Caratacus combined a look of deeply injured innocence with one of deep outrage. But the look on Biggles’ face kept him quiet for the moment

Biggles crouched down and looked around the corner. He looked straight into the face of .... something..... that was doing exactly the same from the other direction.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

He turned back to the others, and waved them to go back a bit. When they had done so, he looked Caratacus straight in the eye. "You need to tell us.....now, what you're trying to hide," he said with a certain tone in his voice. "This is too serious for anything else."

'It's great, great.' Caratacus paused to count on his fingers, 'great, great, great uncle Roland. He didn't quite die at the battle of Waterloo.'

Biggles cast a glance up at Algy before speaking again. "What about Uncle Roland?" He asked, trying frantically to find some sense in the youngster's statement.

"Why would you want to warn him to stay away?" Biggles asked, determined to try y get something to make sense out of.

Biggles thought that was probably the truest thing one of the twins had uttered since his arrival, but he didn't say so. "I think Uncle Algy would quite like to meet Uncle Roland, wouldn't you, Algy? And you too, sir?" He looked at Lord Lacey and winked.

'I'll get him,' Cleopatra announced. 'He's probably hiding in his coffin.' She slipped past Biggles before he could grab her and entered the crypt.

Biggles was aware of his warring emotions. Supernatural fear vied with curiosity.

Cleopatra returned, accompanied by a gaunt, near skeletal figure. 'This is Gruncle Rolly,' she announced brightly. 'You've got to keep him secret.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'
