'It's all Greek to me,' shrugged Algy.

"Stranger things have happened," Dickpa told Algy seriously. He lifted his head and started to sing in a fine baritone:

And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon Englands mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On Englands pleasant pastures seen!

'Wasn't that Glastonbury?' Biggles frowned. 'I thought both the young Jesus and Arthur were associated with Glastonbury.'

'There's a secret passage to there, I think,' offered Cleopatra, 'only there's a big gate across and we can't get it open to check.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

All eyes once more turned upon the twins. "A secret passage to Glastonbury?" Biggles echoed, startled.

'You better show us,' sighed Algy.

"How do you know it goes to Glastonbury?" asked Biggles in genuine astonishment as they prepared to follow the twins.

Silently, the twins pointed to a signpost where the tunnel divided into three. One arm read 'Glastonbury,' one read 'Smugglers' Cove' and one read 'Crypt.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Have you been to the other two places?" Algy asked as they took the way which was signposted to Glastonbury.

The twins exchanged glances and became unusually quiet. "We haven't been to Glastonbury," countered Caratacus, obviously hoping the adults would ignore further reference to the other two destinations.

"That means they've been to the Smugglers Cove and the Crypt," decided Algy, while Cleopatra kicked Caratacus on his shin.

Dickpa chose to ignore the twins and, in great excitement, hurried along the Glastonbury path. As the children had said, it was blocked by a strongly barred gate.

Algy frowned at the debris at the foot of the gate. There was a tyre iron and a ring of old keys, and some thin wire and some used dynamite cartridges. He wondered if they were all relics of the twins' attempts to get through or if others had been here.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

He asked the twins, who seemed quite surprised at the debris. "Those weren't there last time we were here," declared Cleopatra emphatically, pointing to the tyre iron and the dynamite.

"And you didn't put them there?" Lord Lacey quizzed.

They both vehemently shook their heads.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

Biggles tried the gate. It was firmly locked. He examined the walls and the gate. There was no sign of damage from the attempts that had been made to open it. He looked closely at the lock. The key hole was unusually shaped, almost like a sword blade.

'I think,' he announced, 'that if the legends are right, this leads to where Arthur's warriors lie sleeping, to arise in the hour of England's greatest need. I think you need Excalibur to open it.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Dickpa looked very thoughtful as did Lord Lacey and Raymond, who had remained so quiet during the recent discoveries that they had almost forgotten his presence.

“I suspect,” said Dickpa slowly, “that the sword will only be able to be pulled from the stone by a rightful heir. And that no one, not even that heir, will be able to open this gate until ENgland is in its hour of greatest need.”

'So that's all sorted then,' Algy said cheerfully. 'Now, I want to see Smugglers' Cove.'

The twins looked alarmed. “There’s nothing there, Uncle Algy,” they blurted out together at the same time as Biggles said, “I still don’t understand what all this has to do with your box of bits, Dickpa.”

'He can explain on the way to the Cove,' Algy suggested. 'I want to see what's there.'

"The Crypt is much more interesting," Cleopatra told him, eagerly. Too eagerly, confirming Algy's suspicions that the twins had been up to no good at the Cove.

"No, smugglers are much more interesting than mouldy old bones," he told her.

'The people who have been here are more likely to have come from the Smugglers' Cove than the Crypt,' Biggles mused. 'Are there any more places this interesting tunnel goes to, kids?'

"Not according to the map," Caratacus informed him, and earned for himself another kick from his twin.

'What map,' demanded their grandfather. 'Hand it over right now.'

"It doesn't tell you anything," pouted Cleopatra standing her ground. "It's just an old thing we found and played with."
