'He'll have wanted to spy out the lie of the land before committing himself to anything,' Lord Lacey took another large swallow of his tonic wine. 'If it hadn't been for those two, clever children locking him in the wardrobe we might never have known he was here. '
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Cleopatra and Caratacus beamed at this praise. "I forgot," Cleopatra added suddenly. "We frisked him like they do on the telly. Shall I go and fetch what we found?"

'Yes,' chorused all but one of the adults in the room.

Cleopatra sent Caratacus off on this errand and everybody waited patiently. It was only when Caratacus laid down his little bundle that everyone came to life. Amidst the loose change, keys and wallet there lay a gun.

Cleopatra glared at her brother. 'Why are you showing them that? We could have had fun with our own gun.'

Algy glared at his niece and nephew. "It's about time someone gave you the good spanking you deserve and if you're not out of this room within ten seconds it'll be me." He pointed to the door.

They left remarkably meekly, though, and Biggles rather thought he'd seen Caratacus wink at his sister as they did do. No doubt they helped something planned.

However, he has other things on his mind. Lord Lacey had picked up the revolver and was waving it in front of his nephew's face and swearing at him for bringing such a thing into his house for little children to get hold of.

His prodigal nephew shrank back. "Be careful!" he yelled. "It's loaded."

"Ah-ha!" Lord Lacey barked, "so you came with intent to do harm, did you?" He turned to Algy. "Just call the police and get rid of him. "

Algy did. Soon they were down to Raymond, Lord Lacey, Dickpa, the vision of blonde loveliness who was somehow related to Raymond, Algy and Biggles. Biggles frowned. It wasn't like Lettice or Lady Lacey to be absent for so long. Whilst he rejoiced in their absence, he was beginning to be concerned by it.

He took Algy to one side and voices his concerns.

'Don't think their names or they'll appear,' Algy hissed back at him. 'Let's enjoy their absence and work out what the deal with this ruddy box is.'

Alas, as if summoned by their conversation, the door swung open again and the two ladies sailed into the room.

"What is going on here!" Lady Lacey boomed, her eyes sweeping the group and finally landing first on her husband and then on her son.

Algy thought about hiding behind Biggles for a moment, and then glanced across to his father - expecting him to reply to his mother.

"I don't know," Algy declared."They're your children, not mine. I suggest you keep them on reins, or hang bells around their necks."

Lettice glared at her brother and promptly left the room. Her voice echoed back, "Cleopatra, Caratacus!! Where are you, my darlings?"

Lady Lacey turned to the men of her family. "You are highly irresponsible, all of you. Now Lettice is upset and heaven alone know where the twins are!"

"She'll get over it," Algy said recklessly. He was thoroughly fed up with everything and wanted to return to London. He turned to Dickpa, leaving his furious mother to turn her attention to his father. "What happens now, sir?"

Dickpa glanced rather apprehensively at the verbally duelling Lord and Lady Lacey before replying. He beckoned Raymond, the vision (who may or may not be Raymond's niece), Biggles and Algy to gather around him.

"I need this book," he said, scribbling something down on the back of a calling card he had removed from his pocket. "It should be here, on the shelves. Help me to look."

The group separated and began scanning the shelves. Fortunately both Biggles and Algy were keeping a wary eye on the vision. They both saw her adroitly remove a small book and drop it into her accommodating handbag.

They were beside her in a flash. Biggles took hold of her handbag before she knew what was happening. He removed the book. It was the one Dickpa had asked them to find. "Perhaps you'd like to explain yourself?" He asked her, waving the book in front of her nose before passing it to Dickpa.

'Have you no discretion,' she hissed. 'Now you've drawn everyone's attention to my finding the book.'
