The prisoner glared at the twins. But Biggles had had enough.

He tightened his grip on the prisoner's collar. "Tell us exactly who you are, what you are doing here, and what your involvement in this debacle is. Are you aware that we have an Assistant Commissioner of Police from Scotland Yard right here in this room?"

'By rights this should all belong to me,' declared the handcuffed man. 'I've been done out of my inheritance. I'm the eldest brother.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

There was a deathly silence. Eventually, Algy, who had been staring at the man, turned towards his father, who was looking stunned.

'You drowned off the Welsh coast whilst smuggling when you were a lad!' Lord Lacey said indignantly.

Algy looked at the man who in a very short space of time had been uncle, brother and cousin and sent the butler for the tonic wine. It could only improve matters.

Cleopatra and Caratacus were very upset that they were not allowed to have any.Lord Lacey was annoyed the tonic wine had been discovered.

'The Americans loved this stuff,' sighed the unknown relative. 'It wasn't prohibited as it was classed as medicine. I couldn't ship it across fast enough.'

“So that’s where you’ve been hiding,” Algy’s father accused.

'Not hiding. I wasn't paying attention to the passage of time,' the man protested.

'You mean you were in jail,' bellowed Lord Lacey.

“Your father died believing you were dead,” he went on.

“Never mind that,” Biggles broke in. “Don’t you think that it’s just too much of a coincidence that he just happens to turn up here at this precise time?”

'He'll have come straight here on his release,' grunted Lord Lacey. 'To scrounge. He always had an eye to the main chance.'

“We’re tou released from prison or did you escape?” Algy asked shrewdly.

'I was released,' the man replied indignantly, 'and I returned straight to the bosum of my living family.'

'I bet you were on parole and you've skipped,' Biggles guessed.

“Who’s this?” The man turned reproachful eyes to Lord Lacey, nodding his head towards Biggles. “He’s been acting like he lives here, and has a lot to say for himself. But he doesn’t look like a Lacey.”

'That's because I'm not," replied Biggles pleasantly, feeling privately relieved that his branch of the family was unlikely to produce such unpleasant and unwelcome surprises since there was only himself and Dickpa left around. "I'm just a cousin."

"I'm just a cousin too," the man said sourly, "so that means nothing. How are you connected?"

Biggles glared at him. 'You're going off topic. We are talking about why you broke into the house rather than announcing yourself at the door like a reasonable human being.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"And how is it that I've never heard of him before?" Algy asked his father. "I thought I had all the family connections sorted out, but this one is news to me."

'Well, that's very hurtful.' The man turned reproachful eyes on Lord Lacey. 'My feelings are very definitely injured. You could have told the boy that I existed.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

“All this family history is no doubt quite fascinating,” interrupted Biggles coldly. “You still haven’t explained why you broke in and what your interest is in the Etruscan treasure.”

"Who said I was interested in the Estruscan treasure? Not me. Stop trying to put words into my mouth. And who's that sour-faced cove standing there?" He nodded towards Raymond.

'A man can visit his long lost family without being subject to an interrogation,' he replied in a hurt voice. 'Or at least he should be able to. I don't demand or even expect the fatted calf but a bit of a welcome would have been nice.'

"The only welcome you deserve is one by the boys in blue," Biggles told him. "You sneaked into this house for a reason and I want to know what it is."
