"It's ridiculous to think that the twins know more about this than I do," Dickpa hissed to his nephew, "but there is something not quite right here."

"Would it do any harm to let them try?" Biggles asked, now totally confused and getting fed up by the whole business.

Algy was also fed up.

He suggested that everyone made their way down to the library and they could all explain who they were and what their interest was over tea. He bent to unfasten the man handcuffed to the radiator so he could join them.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

The man heaved his head up hard and caught Algy full on the nose. He staggered back, clutching his face as blood poured through his fingers.

Biggles retaliated on Algy's behalf by conking him on the head with a vase full of flowers (and water), which was the closest thing to hand.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

'That was an offering,' Cleopatra said indignantly. 'You'll have to make a new one now.'

'After I've had a cup of tea,' Biggles replied through gritted teeth.

To Biggles' satisfaction the man had sunk to the floor, quite dazed. Biggles snapped the handcuffs back on this wrists and rather savagely hauled him upright.

"I don't see why I should miss my cup of tea just for you," he said savagely. "Would someone help Algy before he bleeds all over the place and I'll find somewhere to keep this fellow." He looked at the twins. "Apart from the wardrobes going to Narnia do you have any suggestions?"

'If we have tea in the library, then we could tie him to one of the pillars,' Caratacus suggested.

"Excellent idea," agreed Biggles and hauled his prisoner along to the Library. There he fastened the man's arms around the pillar and secured his wrists with the cuffs again. He did not offer him any tea.

Biggles waited until everyone had been given a cup then called for their attention.

'My uncle arranged for a box of antiquities to be delivered to my flat. It rested there peacefully until Cleopatra and Caratacus visited, when they played with the contents and took it home without my knowledge. Algy and I came straight down to collect it and discovered it was having a strange effect on lots of people. Now, I want to know everyone's interest in this right now. You can start,' he announced, pointing at....

'I find it saves so many questions if I'm thought to be travelling with my father,' suggested the woman. 'You can call me Shirley if you'd prefer.'

Biggles nodded. "Right, Shirley. What is your interest in this affair?"

'We heard, my partner and I, that the personal collection of an eminent archaeologist had turned up, which was rumoured to hold the key to finding the Treasure of the Etruscans. We wanted a look so we went down to Brendenhall Manor.'

"And what have you done with the real Babbington?" asked Biggles whose stance and tone let it be known that he would not be taking any statement at face value.

'I think he's in China. I used his name as I expected to be able to slip away when you left. I didn't expect you to take me with you.' Babington who was not Babington, answered.

'I know who he is,' Dickpa interrupted. 'He's a treasure hunter. He pretends to be an academic but he isn't. He steals for a German university.'

"Stealing is a strong word," the man said, trying to catch his partners' eye and moving towards the door.

'Accurate, though,' sniffed Dickpa. 'I've heard about what really happened in the underground chambers of the Sphinx.'

"Why don't we just let them go?" Biggles suggested, "since they've got nothing, I can't see much point in allowing them to stay."

Algy rang for his butler and gave orders that they were to be escorted from the property and grounds.

Biggles next turned his attention to the man handcuffed to the pillar.

'Who are you and why did you break into the house?' he demanded.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Why should I tell you anything? Who do you think you are, handcuffing me and hitting me over the head? I'll have my solicitors on to you, I will!" spluttered the man rather incoherently.

"No doubt the twins mother will have her solicitor on to you, for scaring the twins in their own home. I'm sure Cleopatra and Caratacus will be only too pleased to give evidence, won't you, twins?"

The twins nodded, with identical, feral smiles. 'We must tell a judge how much the nasty man frightened us breaking into our house,' Cleopatra suggested. No one in the room believed she'd been frightened. Everyone there believed that she could convince a judge and jury of her fright.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'
